The Motorcycle Boy Reigns…
Thursday, August 16th, 2007 by FrankRumble Fish is one of my favourite films of all time. I caught most of it on TV the other night, prompting me to post this. One of the things I love about the film is the incredible job Stewart Copeland (of Police fame) did with the soundtrack - so many modern soundtracks are bland pieces of crap designed to dictate how you should be feeling about what you are watching rather than working with the artistic vision of the film and complimenting the visuals. What am I talking about? most modern films don’t have artistic vision…
Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, Rumble Fish features Mickey Rourke, Matt Dillon, Nicholas Cage, Diane Lane, Dennis Hopper, Tom Waits, Laurence Fishbourne, Chris Penn and a host of others… even the author of the orginal novel, S.E Hinton makes an appearance.
As we watched the credits last night Eoin spotted ‘and introducing Domino’… who the hell is Domino we wondered? Well, it turns out that Domino played the younger sister of Matt Dillon’s girlfriend (Diane Lane) and Domino is also known as Sofia Coppola, the director’s daughter!
Rumble Fish seems to be on youTube in ten minute chunks, but I wouldn’t recommend watching it like that! I do recommend watching it however, so if you just want to check out the sort of film it is, have a look at this chunk of it. I know loads of people who don’t get why I love this film so much, so maybe it’s not for you. Me, I think it’s one of Coppolas better films, definitely one of Mickey Rourke and Matt Dillon’s finer moments, I love the cinematography, the soundtrack & the cast - and it has some classic cult film lines in it:
Steve: I don’t know why someone hasn’t taken a rifle and blown your head off.
The Motorcycle Boy: Even the most primitive of societies have an innate respect for the insane.
Rumble Fish is far superior to Coppolas ‘The Outsiders‘, also based on an S.E. Hinton book, which seems much better known - but then ‘The Outsiders’ had the brat pack in it, so maybe that’s why. Anyway, go watch it!
