Country For Sale

Tuesday, January 9th, 2007 by Bif

sealandThe smallest country in the world is up for sale, apparently. After a pretty chequered past, which even included an attempted invasion by the British, King Roy of Sealand has decided to offload his tiny principality. Former British Army Major Paddy Roy Bates took over the formar sea fort after physically evicting representatives of Radio Carolina in 1967. An attempt the following year, by the Royal Navy, to evict him was thwarted when he fired warning shots from the fort. A judge later ruled that the island was outside of British jurisdiction. In 1974 Roy of Sealand introduced a constituition and all the other trappings of an independent country - even though no other nation will acknowledge the status. In 1978 Dutch And German businessmen even kidnapped Roy’s son but were eventually captured and held as Prisoners of War. Not surprisingly, there’s a film in the offing.

JPEGr

jpegr logo JPEGr claims to provide the easiest photo hosting on the net and it might just be. You find a photo, you upload it and then you can pass it around or post it to your blog/myspace. It’s just that simple and the interface is clean and usable at every stage. Which is nice. It wouldn’t be an awful lot of use to me but I can imagine it’d be a great spot for someone who just wants to throw up a pic to share with friends or family. How it would hold up hosting images for a well trafficked site is anyone’s guess but they seem to do everything else right. It’s not quite Flickr but, obviously enough, that’s kind of the point.

I don’t know entirely when it stops being art appreciation and becomes leering but if George says it’s a respectful celebration of women, their face, body, and the beautiful inspiration they bring to our world, then I’m inclined to agree. Seriously though, whichever way you want to look at it, the man is a very talented photographer.

Nina Conti And Monkey

It just seems wrong somehow - that someone could come along and make ventriloquism not only funny again but also throw in a healthy dollop of sexiness to boot. Nina Conti. If I say anymore I’ll just end up making a fool of myself.

Ellis Nadler

no peace by ellis nadlerYou’ve got to like the cleverly surreal work of Ellis Nadler and not just because I tell you to. Often when you look at absurd stuff like this, it can come across as contrived but, somehow, Ellis manages to create something that if you twist your head around the right way, it actually could possibly make some sort of sense.

He’s also a bit of a multi-talented bastard, able to turn his hand to cartoony stuff, portraiture and even photography - all with just about enough aplomb to mean you’d probably want to hit him if you ever met him but you would buy him a drink afterwards to apologise. If you still felt bad about it you could even buy one of his prints at Imagekind. And while we’re on the subject, I’d be curious to know if anyone has had any experience with Imagekind, or similar services, because I’ve always thought that a couple of our toons would make nice prints.
