Exciting BifSniff news on the way…

Monday, March 19th, 2007 by Frank

John McCarthyCan’t say much at the moment, but exciting things are happening. I met up last week with my good friend John McCarthy of Hammergrin Theatre Company - I know John for a long while now, can’t even remember from where at this point.

John is a multi talented fellow - he’s a teacher, he’s an actor - so we meet sometimes at the Theatre Makers Working Actors Workshop (worth checking out if you’re a Cork based actor), he’s a musician/singer (also known as Red Hot Steve), he has a wonderful comic sensibility, and he’s a writer.

I probably haven’t covered everything there but you’ve probably already guessed that it’s his writing talents that will come into play in this new project…

I’m not letting the cat out of the bag yet, but expect developments very soon!

Woo-hoo I won something!

Frank Feedburner Earlier this week I received in the post one Feedburner long sleeve top and stickers to go with it!

Pictured is myself modeling this springs Feedburner collection, as snapped by local blog-king Tom Raftery.

Many thanks to Paul Browne from FirstPartners.net, who ran the competition, and also thanks to Ask Direct who made me aware of the competition.

As it happens, the top is somewhat large for me so I might donate it to my fashion photographer Tom… unless it’s to large for him too…

1,000 free text messages? SPAM!

Thursday, March 15th, 2007 by Frank

text spam

Beware text messages that require you to click on a link - even if they are offering free text messages and look vaguely official!

If in doubt, ring your service provider and check if they are running such a promotion!

Got a ‘Service Message’ type text today from ‘Promo’ which contained a message saying ‘Claim your 1,000 Text Messages! Connect & Collect’ followed by a link.

I had never received a ‘Service Message’ type text before, they come in looking different, and as such might fool you into thinking they are from your service provider. But on calling Vodafone they confirmed it was not from them.

What’s more they advised me to call back on Monday so they could confirm I had not been billed for RECEIVING the message!!! I’m not sure how the hell that could happen, the Vodafone operator was extremely helpful and nice but I was in the middle of something and didn’t have time to chase up the details.

I hope to get more info on Monday when I call to check my Bill.

So don’t be fooled by this type of message - from my chat with Vodafone they reckon if you click on the link you will most likely end up subscribed to a premium rate text service of some kind. I’ll post more info as I get it.

If in doubt call your service provider and ask them if they are running a promotion.

Is Google Evil?

Monday, March 12th, 2007 by Frank

Google is EvilI was sent a link to this the other day - ‘Master Plan The Movie’, about Google having too much access to too much personal information.

While graphically beautiful, the piece itself is a bit weak, and possibly even in danger of smelling like a nutjob conspiracy theory and therefore undermining a valid concern.

Google are known to have an informal motto ‘Don’t Be Evil’ - but are they abiding by it?

I found a very interesting, and seemingly balanced article on Wired entitled Google vs Evil.

Some quotes from the article, but it’s worth reading in full:

The world’s biggest, best-loved search engine owes its success to supreme technology and a simple rule: Don’t be evil. Now the geek icon is finding that moral compromise is just the cost of doing big business.
