THE ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE FOR MUSICIANS
Introductory Workshop
Firkin Crane Theatre, Shandon, Cork
Sunday 16. November @ 1pm – 5:30pm
Cost 50,-Euros
To book a place please ring 087-9584232 or email kathryn.doehner@gmail.com

The Alexander Technique forms a part of the professional practice of
thousands of musicians worldwide and is an integral part of training
at all leading music & drama teaching institutions around the globe.
Practising the Alexander Technique, efficiency and freedom in movement
are achieved minimising stress and strain often associated with music
making.

Most musicians at some stage in their life experience some physical
pain, tension in performance, stage fright or other anxiety, which can
limit the playing of their instruments to the best of their ability.

In the long term professional musicians are just as likely to be
permanently sidelined by an injury as professional football players.
And amateur musicians are not immune from pain and injury either.

Most musicians hurt themselves because they misuse their bodies, not
because of disease or structural anomalies.

Too often attention is paid to “tuning” our instruments, while the
equally important job of “tuning” ourselves is neglected.

The Alexander Technique is an effective tool to increase musicians
self awareness and get rid of harmful habits that cause unnecessary
tension and restrict capabilities..

Whenever we move or think, we have a choice: we can use ourselves
either intelligently or carelessly. The Alexander Technique teaches
musicians to use themselves with intelligence, improving performance,
promoting freedom from injury, rapid recovery and a better overall
standard of health.

During the workshop participants will become more aware of the
structure and function of the body as it applies to playing music,
learning how to make changes to become free of pain and injury.

Bring your instrument and avoid early retirement.
(voice is an instrument too :-))

Facilitators:

Federico Betti –ISATT, STAT, ATI is a fully qualified teacher of the
Alexander Technique with a particular interest in performing artists.
After studying classical violin he became interested in Irish
traditional music. He played extensively with several music groups
around Italy and Switzerland and in 1999 he left Italy for Ireland
where he set out to learn more about Irish fiddle music. After a car
accident he began to experience debilitating pain which stopped him in
his musical journey. In 2002 he became familiar with the Alexander
Technique which allowed him to get rid of a number of problems, in
particular back and neck pain, which had limited his music in previous
years. From 2002 to 2005 he trained as an Alexander Technique teacher
in Ireland with Richard Brennan.

Originally from Milan, Italy, he now lives in Galway where he plays
and teaches traditional music from Ireland, France and Italy.
He teaches the Alexander Technique in collaboration with several music
institutions in Ireland and in Italy where he holds Alexander
Technique workshops for musicians and singers.

Kathryn Doehner, BA, ATI, ISATT is a qualified teacher of the
Alexander Technique. She was trained in classical violin in Germany
and has performed in various symphony orchestras in Germany before she
got involved in Jazz improvisation and particular Latin American
music. She has toured Europe and Brazil together with various
artists. One of the difficulties she was facing as a performing
artist was stage fright and anxiety about performing. With the help
of the Alexander Technique she was able to let go of patterns of
behaviour that kept her from being authentic as an artist and human
being. It has made her aware of unwanted habitual responses in her
thinking and in her emotional life and gave her the tools to respond
differently to life’s challenges on and off stage. It has also given
her back a sense of ease within her body while playing her instrument.

Originally from Germany she now lives in Cork where she performs as a
violinist and singer with artists such as Tonynho dos Santos and Niwel
Tsumbu. She also has her private Alexander Technique practise in
Whitescross, Cork.

Multilevel Communication, trance and Improv Workshop

This workshop introduces ideas from the literature on hypnosis as
things you already know, but may not be conscious of, yet.

We may be familiar with the storytelling device of a story within a
story: eg. The Notebook, The Thomas Crown Affair, The Neverending
Story, but we may not be using these kind of patterns in our own
language, storytelling or scenework. This is one of the many language
patterns used to create trance. We explore this pattern of stacking
stories on top of each other, as well as others eg. pacing and
leading, careful use of sensory based language.

If you’re familiar with improv, these will probably be new and
exciting ideas. If you’re familiar with hypnosis, the connection with
improv and the improv exercises will bring energy and life.

Saturday 22nd of November from 12.30 to 2pm at Triskel Arts Centre (Tobin St.)

If you are interested in participating please contact

Projects & Funding

Project Brand New…

What will you make?

Project Brand New is an initiative, which exists to provide a
framework for theatre, dance, music and live art practitioners to
develop new work for the stage outside the traditional production
model. Together with Project Arts Centre we are offering you the
opportunity to put new ideas into practice at a developmental stage,
in an informal environment.

Project Brand New is about innovation, experimentation, and work that
strives towards the new. In March 2008, 13 pieces across many art
forms were shown as part of Project Brand New’s sell-out debut season.
In July, we moved upstairs where 12 pieces played to full houses over
three nights. We are now delighted to present the next season of
Project Brand New in January 2009, in Project Space Upstairs and we’re
dying to know what you will make….

Here’s how it works:

Over three nights in January 2009 (15, 16, 17) Project Space Upstairs
will play host to 8-12 new works made by you. These works can be up to
twenty minutes long. You can make whatever you like. You can use a
video projector, a playback sound system and anything else you can get
in and out of the space in a ten-minute turn around.

If you are interested, all you have to do is submit your ideas to us.
We ask for a brief description of your idea and where you would like
to take it, in no more than 500 words and a biography detailing your
previous work as an artist. If you are submitting a new play or
musical text, it is helpful, though not essential, for us to read a
draft of what you intend to present (N.B. please do not send us more
than 15 pages of any text, or more than 8 if the piece is a
monologue…if what you intend to present is part of a longer script,
just send us the section you will be working on and a synopsis of the
full text.)

Submissions will be assessed under the following criteria:

*The artistic quality of your idea
*The scope of your ambition
*The practical needs of your idea

Once we have selected the successful submissions for Project Brand
New, we will work with you to assist you in bringing your ideas to
fruition…You’ll have over 4 weeks to rehearse and execute your idea.
Project Brand New is a not-for-profit venture, where all the
participants’ time and resources, including Project Arts Centre, are
being offered free of charge. We do not have any additional budget for
props or equipment.

Please submit your application by 5pm on FRIDAY 5TH OF DECEMBER to
projectbrandnew@gmail.com. Please only send .doc, .pdf or .rtf files
and not .docx. Remember to include a contact phone number!
Louise Lowe, Jody O’Neill and Deirdre Roycroft

Deadline for receipt of applications: 10th December 2008

The Firkin Crane, one of the focal points for dance in Ireland,
announces its first annual call for applications for its new residency
programme titled “BLANK CANVAS”.
BLANK CANVAS encapsulates the essence of what the Firkin Crane aims to
achieve through its residency programme.
It provides for a visiting professional artist/company, through an
application progress, to work and stay with the Firkin Crane.
It provides dance artist(s) with the opportunity to explore their
creative work processes, in ways which suit their needs and
creativity, for example a residency exploring an idea through an
initial research phase or a residency which has a specific outcome in
mind e.g. production or publication …..and all the stages in between.
Within the programme BLANK CANVAS four of the chosen applicants will
be invited to particiate in what we will designate as “Framed
Residencies”. A Framed Residency will be of fixed duration and with
pre-determined outcomes and may provide some financially based
support. Of the four Framed Residencies two will be with Irish based
dance artists and two will be international. One of the four will
culminate in a fully finished production.
The selection process for all Firkin Crane residencies will be panel based.
Further information on the Firkin Crane along with Information and

This Gathering will have the twin themes of Inclusion and Community
Building - Surviving the ‘ Recession’. During the early planning
stages we spent some time thinking about who comes to these gatherings
and how we could encourage and enable more diverse participation,
especially for people who have found it difficult to attend previous
gatherings. To facilitate this we are holding the event in city center
venues with full accessibility, making it child, parent, teenager and
elder friendly and asking as many groups and communities as possible
what we need to do to make them feel welcome ( Basically trying to let
go of thinking that we have all the answers and doing a bit more
listening ! ) If you are planning on attending we hope you will try
stepping outside your comfort zone and invite or enable a friend you
may not have approached due to shyness or stereotyping to join you.

Theatre Maker’s Working Actors’ Workshop presents
Aesop’s Fabulous Foibles and Fables
At the Half Moon Theatre

fables. This show, which premiered at Cork Midsummer Festival, had
everyone laughing non-stop, including (maybe most of all!) the adults
in the audience.

in Sheep’s Clothing, Aesop parades before us a circus of foolish and
funny human traits as colourful and varied as the menagerie of animals
(including the human) that he uses to communicate them.
See these characters brought to hilarious life, with all their too
familiar faults and failings. Suitable for anyone 4 years and older.

Granary Theatre Presents: New Director’s Festival:
DUCK
by Stella Feehily / directed by Laura Daly
Granary Theatre | 24 October - 01 November 2008 | 8pm | €12/€8

Director’s Note
I first discovered Duck in a Drama and Theatre Studies lecture hall.
Its potential immediately struck me. I was thrilled to get the
opportunity to direct it for The New Director’s Festival. It is a
hard-hitting, unapologetic piece that is crammed to the brim with
every social and cultural problem imaginable that is coming to the
fore in a post Celtic Tiger Ireland. My approach to the work has been
to focus on the characters. At times their circumstances may seem
unreal or inaccessible to a theatre going audience but my aim has been
to offer an image of fully developed, deep characters that the
audience is forced to identify with as their realities are portrayed
with truth and honesty. Cat and Sophie strive for something more in
their lives but they are caught in a cycle that is endlessly turning
and though they attempt to start a new and to take their first flight
it seems that the cycle will simply start to turn again and Cat and
Sophie will remain forever two ducks out of the water. This play will
slap you in the face, unsettle and unnerve….but sure why else would
you go to the theatre?!

THE PRODUCERS OF ‘TWELVE ANGRY MEN’ AND ‘THE ODD COUPLE’ RETURN WITH:

‘THE DRESSER’ BY RONALD HARWOOD
STARRING ALF MCCARTHY AND CONOR DWANE

Tuesday 11 – Saturday 22 November

The Everyman Palace Theatre is delighted to announce the return of
Skylight Productions with Ronald Harwood’s classic play THE DRESSER in
mid-November. The Cork based company have become synonymous great
productions of 20th Century classics, having had hugely successful
runs at the Palace with THE ODD COUPLE in 2007 and TWELVE ANGRY MEN in
2006.

Alf McCarthy and Conor Dwane are re-united on stage in Ronald
Harwood’s funny and poignant study of the relationship between a
cantankerous Shakespearean actor and his loyal personal assistant. Set
on a production of King Lear during the Blitz in 1942, THE DRESSER
paints an evocative picture of wartime England.

Based on Ronald Harwood’s own experiences as dresser to a
distinguished English Shakespearean actor, THE DRESSER was nominated
for an Oliver Award after its world premiere in London in 1980, and
Tony Award and Drama Desk nominations after its debut on Broadway
during the same year. Adapted to a screenplay in 1983, the film
version was nominated for five Academy Awards.

THE DRESSER is produced by Skylight Productions in association with
Everyman Palace Theatre. Directed by Mairin Prendergast, the cast
features RTE’s Alf McCarthy, Conor Dwane, Martina Carroll, David Coon,
George Hanover, Kevin O’Meara and Niamh Hatchell.

THE DRESSER runs from November 11th – 22nd at the Everyman Palace
Theatre. Tickets are €25 / €20 and €7 for Students from Monday to
Wednesday, and can be booked on 021 4501673 or www.everymanpalace.com

Too Highbrow & Clinic Media present the World Premiere
of Kenneth Hickey’s play

‘Night Swimming’.

‘Night Swimming’ is a character driven story of death, love, madness
and loss. Directed by the up’n'coming Eoin Ó hAnnracháin and starring
the exciting talent of James Browne & Kate McSwiney O’Rourke.

In the darkness Jason is forced to deal with the shadowy regrets of
the past. We witness his tortured attempt at unravelling how fate has
led him to an ending he never wanted. With his wife Lorna he must
relieve his relationship from start to finish, scene by scene, over
the course of one night, until some understanding can be gained. But
insight can come too late for salvation. And sometimes it doesn’t come
at all…

Writer Kenneth Hickey is among the most exciting literary talent to
emerge from Cork in recent years. Hickey has had his work published
not only in Ireland, but England and the USA. He was the winner of
the Eamon Keane Full Length Play Award in 2005 and was short listed
for the award again in 2007. His one act play ‘Song of the Shore’ was
produced as part of the Windsor Fringe Festival in 2006, as well as by
the Theatre Studio Inc. New York in 2007. His plays are regularly
given rehearsed readings by Moving Parts Theatre Paris. Artistic
director of Too Highbrow, this will be Hickey’s fourth production of
his writing.

Director Eoin Ó hAnnracháin earned rave reviews for his ‘Howie the
Rookie’, part of the New Directors Festival in The Granary theatre
2007. He is one of the founding members of Clinic Media with David
O’Byrne, whose first project was ‘Howie The Rookie’ and next is their
self-penned, ‘Falling Slowly’. Ó hAnnracháin’s work has been described
as, ‘Fantastic and entirely credible….a fine achievement’.

‘Night Swimming’ stars two of Cork’s finest young actors; Kate
McSwiney O’Rourke and James Browne. Best known for his role in
‘Strength and Honour’, James Browne has treaded the boards with
companies such as Meridian in the past and is returning to the stage
for ‘Night Swimming’ . Kate McSwiney O’Rourke has earned critical
acclaim for her ‘dedicated & stunning’ performances in productions
such as, ‘4.48 Psychosis’, ‘Lifeboat’, ‘Othello’ and, ‘Vanity, Vapours
& Dizzy Debutantes’. Both actors recently appeared in the popular Cork
short, ‘Closure’, in this year’s Cork Film Festival.

Performances will run 8pm, 11th – 15th of November in the Cork Arts
Theatre, Carroll’s Quay, Cork.
To book call +353 21 4505624.
Tickets are E15/10 conc.

Join Orpheus and sing your heart out!

The Orpheus Choir is looking for new members, especially ladies!
‘ Orpheus’ is a mixed-voice Munster choir, whose members come from
all over the province. It was founded in 2005 by a small group of
enthusiastic singers, but quickly gained enough members to be able to
have its inaugural concert in Castletownroche in 2007.
This year the choir, now with over thirty members, had a couple of
very successful concerts in Conna, Co. Cork and Cappoquin, Co.
Waterford and this coming season they have been invited back to Conna
as well as to Castlelyons, Fermoy and Mitchelstown.
Their repertoire ranges from secular choral music to opera choruses
and Irish ballads, but it is not necessary to be able to read music or
to have prior choral experience, as each member is supplied with a
learning CD of the music.
Choir practices take place from September to April on Monday nights
from 8pm to 10pm in the function-room of the Forge Bar, Fermoy, Co.
Cork and interested parties are always welcome to come along and
listen or partake, to see if they might like to join.
The choir, ‘a sociable bunch’, always in for a bit of ‘ craic agus
ceoil’, also regularly organise social evenings with, of course, the
obligatory ’sing-song’ going on into the wee small hours of the
morning!

Upcoming audition for Blackthorn Theatre Company’s latest production,
a modernized version of William Shakespeare’s “The Tragedy of Hamlet”.

Directions available on request.

as snobby private-schoolers, Claudius as an underhanded politician,
etc). The play is scheduled to be performed in the Cork Arts Theatre
during the last week of January ‘09. Actors of all ages and genders
are required.

Casting and Extras Co-ordination
The Eclipse
Rainwater Films, Rushbrooke Commercial Centre, Cobh. 2008

Last Chance To Be An Extra!

“The Eclipse” is shooting in Cobh between September 1st and October 3rd 2008.
See bottom for information on the film.

I am hosting a final call for Extras this Thursday August 28th, 4 -
7pm, in The Jack Doyle Room, at The Commodore Hotel, Cobh.

In particular I am looking for men and women in their 40’s, 50’s,
60’s, 70’s… and/or close to retirement age. The film is set at a
Writers Festival. One of the featured novelists writes ghost stories
and I am looking for interesting faces to add character and atmosphere
to the stunning gothic setting of Cobh Cathedral.

We particularly welcome faces with unusual features that hint at other
worlds; noses headed west, missing or black teeth, wild hair or big
eyes… faces full of character that tell us a story or hint at an
interesting life just by looking at them! This might be the
poet-muse-intellectual look or the country-just-down-from-the-hills
look. We welcome you to join us on Thursday night at The Commodore in
Cobh!

Extras are often needed for one day or occasionally two or three days.

Extras are paid €80 a day or €40 for a half day.

The film is directed by Conor McPherson and produced by Robert Walpole
of Treasure Films.

Below is a short introduction to the film:
Michael Farr has started to wonder if his life adds up. He has a
beautiful wife, Eleanor, and two great kids Sarah and Tom. He is a
respected schoolteacher in his local school and an active member of
his local community but somehow he’s beginning to ask himself
questions about the meaning of it all. Growing up in small town
Ireland he and his close friends had dreams of greatness and breaking
free of their hokey small-town roots. Under the spell of local artist
Malachy, they held boozy artists gatherings where they read aloud
great literature and sometimes shared their own fumbling imitations of
their heroes. In those days they were all going to go on to great
things and build adoring audiences for their work. In the way of these
things their youthful dreams have passed and now in middle age their
writers group has evolved into the town’s annual literary festival.
Michael and his friends from the early days are members of its
unwieldy committee, all their dreams of being writers subsumed into
the harsh reality of keeping their lives on track and paying the
bills. At least the annual festival gives them the chance to rub
shoulders with what they might have been in another life, the life of
their youthful dreams…
The Eclipse marks the first cinematic collaboration between two of
Ireland’s leading writers Billy Roche (The Wexford Trilogy,
Cavalcaders, Trojan Eddie) and Conor McPherson (The Weir, Dublin
Carol, The Seafarers, I Went Down, Saltwater, The Actors) who co-wrote
the screenplay which is based on a short story from Billy Roche’s
recently published collection Tales From Rainwater Pond. The film will
be Conor McPherson’s fourth as a director after Saltwater, Endgame and
The Actors.

Magic Moments

“Let us light a fire in your heart. Let us come up behind you, tap you
on the shoulder and whisper a secret. The world can change in a
moment. A magic moment. One minute of delight and danger a day, every
day of the Fringe. Keep watching. We’ll find you.”

Project Brand New’s next outing is something slightly different.
We are inviting proposals for a 60 second piece whose sole function is
to stimulate and inspire its audience. And this time round, we are not
offering any technical support. No theatre, no lights. Just you, an
audience, and your imagination.
We challenge you to make something heartfelt and simple.

will appear, happen, and disappear. All in the space of one minute.
A Magic Moment.

So, in 500 words, tell us what you would like to make. You can submit
as many ideas as you like.

Tell us exactly what will happen.
Tell us exactly how you will make it happen.
Tell us for whom it will happen.
Tell us which week of the Fringe would suit you better.

They Never Froze Walt Disney
By Jody O’Neill

A chilling tale of romance, remorse and refrigeration in rural Ireland

suspicious circumstances that reunite them many years later.

Bachelor in Acting Studies, Trinity College. Jody is co-curator of
Project Brand New, has written for Fishamble, Tall Tales and Magnet
Productions and recently finished filming for Season Six of The

new ways of facilitating the actor’s art. They Never Froze Walt
Disney, the company’s first production, premiered in June 2007 as part
of the Cork Midsummer Festival where it was warmly received by

MERIDIAN THEATRE COMPANY presents

“Beaten” by Ailis Ni Riain

Ailis Ni Riain’s post-postmodern play “Beaten” is a re-working of her
debut success, Tilt. Think Sarah Kane, early Edward Bond, with Pat
McCabe thrown in, and you’re close to feeling the imaginative punch of
this inventive play. Savage humour, searing performances, a moody
sound score and lighting and direction by Tony McCleane-Fay combine to
make this a riveting theatrical experience. “Beaten” runs at the
Granary Theatre from September 10th to 20th.

Set “in the bowels of County Cork,” Beaten is a fast and furious play
about revenge, retribution and reconciliation and dramatises the
relationship between a grieving young girl, her two lost brothers and
their long-gone, but ever-present, Dada.

Ailis is also a composer, and working closely with Granary director
Tony McCleane-Fay, she has re-worked an intensely musical piece in
which the brute realities of emotional violence are treated with such
grace and lyrical intensity that the dark materials of family trauma
became an elegant vocal symphony.

“Ni Riain has constructed a thing of haunted beauty and inherent
musicality. Each rapid-fire phrase pummels the air in a series of
blistering crescendos, passed around the family like a choral
litany.….It’s an elegy of their own lost lives, ….fuelled by love and
anger.” - Glasgow Herald.

Beaten is performed as part of Blood + Bandage, a new festival
designed to support and foster new plays and new forms of theatre
emerging in Cork. Based in the Granary Theatre, this first annual
festival features work by Meridian, Granary Theatre and Be Your Own
Banana and showcases three Cork pieces developed in the city in the
past two years.

“Beaten” runs at the Granary Theatre from September 10 to 20 (Previews
8 & 9 Sept, 8pm Nightly. Ticket Prices: €15 & €10 conc. (All Previews
€10) and booking is on 021 490 4275 or in person at Granary Box Office

The Blood + Bandage Festival also features “Thailand: What’s Love Got
To Do With It?” by Máirtín de Cógáin & Brian Desmond which opens at
the Granary Studio on September 10th and the World Premiere of “There
are Little Kingdoms” by Kevin Barry, which opens on September 24th.

Blackthorn Theatre Company Presents

“PRISONERS”
By Luke Field

Cork Arts Theatre
15th-16th August
@ 8pm
Tkts €10

Bookings call 021-4505624

“Prisoners” is the story of a bank heist in small-town Ireland. The
robbers are there on behalf of a shady socialist organisation, and
battle lines seem clearly drawn at first. But when things go wrong and
a hostage situation develops due to the Gardaí laying siege to the
bank, everyone starts questioning which side they’re on. Loyalty,
cynicism, and opportunism constantly struggle for supremacy in an
explosive play littered with tension, action and some dark comedy.

Blackthorn Theatre Company was formed initially by members of PBC
Cork’s 2008 production of Brian Friel’s “Philadelphia, Here I Come!”.
We are a group of writers, actors and directors based in Cork City and
county. Prisoners is Blackthorn’s maiden project, an in-house script
written by Luke Field.

GALLOGLASS THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS

TOP GIRLS
by Caryl Churchill

GALLOGLASS THEATRE COMPANY has great pleasure in announcing that its
next production will be TOP GIRLS, by the celebrated British
playwright Caryl Churchill.
DO you remember the 1980’s? DO you remember Margaret Thatcher?

Caryl Churchill’s iconic play, TOP GIRLS, mixes fantasy and reality,
history and heresy to bring you the story of Marlene. A bit too old to
be a “girl”, with a healthy taste for whisky, Marlene has just been
promoted at work. In a world where men are the employers, where do
children and warmth and vulnerability have a place? And if you must
give them up, what are the consequences? TOP GIRLS is a deeply human
and moving examination of feminist values in the home, in the
workplace, and in our past and the contrast between a celebration of
capitalism and the individual and socialism and the collective. TOP
GIRLS is sometimes political, sometimes hilarious, but always
painfully true.

Michael Billington, Theatre Critic for The Guardian said “The work
builds to a superb emotion-draining climax that sent me out of the
theatre convinced that this is the best British play ever from a woman
dramatist”.

Jason Byrne, one of Ireland’s most talented and accomplished young
directors, will direct TOP GIRLS. He has most recently directed Loose
Canon’s production of PHAEDRA’S LOVE and also ROMEO AND JULIET at the
Abbey Theatre, the latest in an impressive line of his successes at
that Theatre. Jim Myers of Galloglass said “We are delighted to be
working with Jason Byrne on this production. Caryl Churchill is
recognised internationally as a distinguished and brilliant
playwright, possessing incisive intelligence, wit and emotion, and I
am confident that Jason is the person to explore the resonances of
this inspired and exceptional play for a contemporary audience”.

The cast of seven features KATE NIC CHONAONAIGH, JANICE BYRNE, LESLEY
CONROY, LIZ FITZGIBBON, ELAINE FOX, LOUISE LEWIS, and NYREE
YERGAINHARSIAN. The set and costume designer is ALYSON CUMMINS and
lighting designer is SARAH JANE SHIELS.

TOP GIRLS opens at The Granary Theatre, on August 25th and runs until
August 30th.

Meridian & Granary Theatre present

Blood and Bandage: A Festival of New Theatre created in Cork

Blood and Bandage is a new festival designed to support and foster new plays
and new forms of theatre emerging in Cork. Based in the Granary Theatre,
this first annual festival features work by Meridian, Granary Theatre and Be
Your Own Banana and showcases three Cork pieces developed in the city in the
past two years.

Meridian’s There Are Little Kingdoms by Kevin Barry is a comic cruise
through a day in the life of an unnamed Irish town. We have pool hall
legends, wife-swapping Casanovas, prescription drugs, fast girls looking for
faster cars, a broken windscreen, a dislocated shoulder, not to mention the
taxi-driver who can tell you how you’ll die or the quare fella running the
chipper who does a savage turn at Roy Orbison. Barry’s sparkling adaptation
of his award-winning book of short stories is the darkest funniest portrait
of small-town Irish life to have emerged in years.

Beaten by Ailis Ni Riain is a serious re-working of Ni Riain’s debut success
Tilt. Set “in the bowels of County Cork”, Beaten is a fast and furious play
about revenge, retribution and reconciliation and dramatises the
relationship between a grieving young girl, her two lost brothers and their
long-gone but ever-present Dada. Working closely with Granary Director Tony
McCleane-Fay, Ni Riain, who is also a composer, has re-created an intensely
musical piece in which the brute realities of emotional violence are treated
with such grace and lyrical intensity that the dark materials of family
trauma become an elegant vocal symphony.

Thailand: What’s Love Got To Do With It? by Brian Desmond and Mairtin de
Cogain was a sell-out success in the Cork MidSummer Festival 2007. A
hilarious romp through the brothels of Pattaya, this savage satire on Irish
sex tourism is being showcased here and will tour nationally with the
support of Meridian Theatre Company. Featuring the legendary Mairtin de
Cogain, Thailand is a no holds barred account of cheap thrills in exotic
places. Buzzing with wit and sly intelligence, it also cheerfully slams a
culture closer to home where everything has a price and hardly anything has
value.

In addition to the productions, the festival will also include workshops and
readings of works in progress. These will continue after the festival with
the intention of developing projects for future festivals.

ART EXHIBITIONS

Piedescalso Art Cafe invites you to

Tom Campbell
an exhibition of paintings & drawings

“I have been passionate about art since childhood. I think an artist
should be humble and always strive to make ‘better work’. Picasso said
that, ‘a painting is an act of war’. I like the passion in that
statement but I think art is an act of love and peace, an act that can
unite and inspire, unlike the destructive results of war. I am not so
interested in talking about the work I have made, I would prefer to
concentrate on the work I will make. I will be an artist until I die.”

Exhibition runs till end of August

Piedescalso Art Cafe
78 Thomas street

——————————————————————————————————————

Given the success we decided to extend our dates in Ireland:

“BOXETTE - THE CLOWN SHOW” will be shown again in Cork:

DATES: Wednesday 30 July & Wednesday 6th of August.
TIME: 8:30pm
VENUE: Crane Lane Theatre, Phoenix Street, Cork
TICKETS: 8 € at the door

“Boxette”, a clown show with Carlo Jacucci, Pedro Pires Pinto and Kosei Yakuwa.

Three clowns stage their version of the Swann Lake. Suzette Ballett,
old star of the Russian ballet, plays a princess. She employs the
clown Botticelli as assistant, coach, referee, body guard, musician,
and the clown Mohamed-Ali-Gâteaux to play the prince. But in fact this
will hijack any attempt to stage the story.

This epic tale drifts to a catastrophic cascade of events. Nothing is
what it is supposed to be, and what is supposed to be fails at the
attempt of being something. Between dance, music, magic and
choreographed fight, the only thing that prevails is the fun of
disrupting any expectation. It doesn’t matter if the announced show
has never started. Tonight the fun is bigger than ourselves. Tonight
we found something better.

THE COMPANY

The Gazpacho Brothers was founded in 2007 by a group of artists from

Gaulier in Paris. The company was created with the intention of
pursuing the European tradition of clown in its classical and
traditional forms. The company’s approach is founded on the teaching
of Philippe Gaulier, a great teacher of this genre.*

Boxette has been created with the artistic consultancy of Pablo
Ibarluzea and Ruth Garreta.

*Philippe Gaulier will teach a workshop in Dublin from 14 to 18 April
2009. Please call 0833 480 474 or 0872 645 074 for more information

“THE SHAPE OF A GIRL is loosely based on the Reena Virk Story: the
real life tragedy of a 14-year-old girl killed by a boy and a group of
girls, also teenagers. Braidie is fascinated by a TV news story about
a girl accused of a shocking act of violence, “a monster in the shape
of a girl”. A different kind of girl from her and her friends…or is
she? Propelled by memories she can’t forget and scenes from her past
she can no longer ignore, Braidie must confront the truth of her
giddy, terrifying teenage world.

Can she find the courage to break her fri
