Grid Computing comes of age

Friday, August 28th, 2009 by Spaghetticode

Yes! Finally this is starting to get off the ground. I know the paranoid first reaction is to start worrying about SkyNet and Terminators knocking at the door, but the benefits are too great to ignore.

I’m just playing around with this now but the potential is fantastic and I am totally hooked. My inner hippie loves the fact that all those squandered CPU cycles and wasted energy are being put to good use, while my inner nerd is simultaneously squealing with delight at the idea of turning the internet into a massive super computer.

If you haven’t heard of grid computing before, the idea fairly straight forward and elegant, albeit fiddly enough in its implementation. Simply put, you use idle computers to solve the worlds problems. That might mean anything from protein folding or cancer research to number crunching data from radio telescopes in the hope that ET is trying to reconnect with Elliot. You get to decide which projects interest you the most; and bob’s your auntie. Your computer grabs a bunch of data and quietly chews away at it while you’re taking that coffee break.

You can download the application and get started right now. Check it out here:

And I think its gonna be a long long time

Waiting Room

Thursday, April 10th, 2008 by Spaghetticode

I urge you all to make your way to Cyprus Avenue @9pm in Cork on Sunday night to check out Waiting Room. This is a one time reunion gig, it wont happen again because the story doing the rounds is that they don’t get on too well anymore. They broke up over a year ago but had a finished album in the can. That album has now been mastered and is good to go, so this is a once in a lifetime opportunity. And they are glorious. Deep soul searching music with a punch and a killer groove that whisks you away to someplace you’d always imagined was only a dream. Its sad and its beautiful. I shall be up the front crying into my beer, hopefully see ye all there.

Citizens Action On Global Warming

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007 by Spaghetticode

Help the the biggest citizens action against global warming!

The “Alliance pour la Planète” (national group of Global Warming foundations) is launching a message to all the citizens. 5 minutes for the planet : all people shut down your lights, television… on February the 1st between 19h55 and 20h00.

The aim isn’t to win 5 minutes of energy only on this day, but to alert citizens, medias and politicians about the Global Warning (which is also the aim of Global Warming Awareness2007 SEO contest), and urgent need to act.

5 minutes to help the planet is nothing for you, it costs nothing, and it will prove to the future president of France that Global Warming is an important topic.

Why February the 1st ? A new report from a group of specialists on Global Warming will be released this day. This event will take place in France (edit: but why not make it international right?): that’s why you must be involved in it to show how the Global Warming alert is important!

If we are all involved in this event, it will have a real impact on medias and politicians, and we are less than three months from the presidential elections. Please talk about this message on your web sites and newsletters

Remember, its GMT + 1 over there.

Here’s the official website, but it seems to be down at the moment:
