Raya Ariella of the The Climate Crisis Coalition responded to my email to say that she didn't think too many devices use a surge of energy to get turned back on so not to worry about it.

She did say she probably would have kept it to lights if it was her intiative, but they're simply spreading the word on it I think.

Bummer. I didn't think of that. We're damed if we do and double damed if we don't... or is it the other way around...?... Oh jesus, I just wanna go live in the wilderness, grow some veggies and make a few extra bux using a solar powered laptop. Who wants to start a commune? Preferably in Costa Rica.

Oh that's interesting... is that a certainty? How the hell would one measure how long we'd have to switch off for to make an impact?

The amount of energy required to turn all those devices back on will far exceed the energy they would have used up in those five minutes. Power companies will love this.

Yup yup, and I agree 100% with the sentiment, I just wondered about how the effectiveness is measured...

I'm all for this idea, I'd just love to be able to see the results - I think it may be that the power companies accounting departments will be the only ones who will know how well this effort was co-ordinated!

Well, I bet if the power companies lose a few bucks then people will start raising eyebrows...

The goal is fairly simple, it just says that we the consumers want cleaner and more efficient power, and we can put a dent in profit margins to get it.

Rich.. has a point there on damage limitation through extinction...

How does this actually work though? How is it documented? How does anyone know you turned off your lights?

I like the idea, but what does it really achieve I wonder?

Has anybody stopped to consider that global warming might be a good thing ? I for one am enjoying the warmer climate and if I had the time, I'd elaborate on several other fringe benefits. Even if the worst case scenario comes about and we make life on this planet unsustainable, well then we don't get to "evolve/progress" long enough to colonise any other planets and fuck them up too. That's good too is it not ?
