Lisbon Treaty – what will happen next?
June 13th, 2008 by Frank
So it’s looking like the No’s have it. If so, what will happen next? Will they have the balls to pull another Nice on it? I think they wish they could…
I voted No to Lisbon, but I had some reservations. Donncha led me to this post by Deb on Lisbon which I thought was a really good post on why she was voting No – worth a read, but I’ll quote a bit:
Voting no does not say no to Europe. It says “Oi, Brussels, this is a load of shite, now get back there and come up with something that makes sense.”
Yes, we realise it’s not an easy job, but just because your job is difficult doesn’t mean we have to accept what your offering us now! Go sort it out, and No we won’t vote again because we got it ‘wrong’.
Thanks to Walter for the idea of lolling Martin. If you feel like stealing it you can, or use our bandwidth by using this code with a link back to here:

That lolcat is great! I’ll rip that if you don’t mind. I think that html should not include the urchin Javascript – it’ll give an error message on sites that don’t have it installed.
The commentary on radio is laughable. It’s all doom and gloom and even suggestions that we’ll be kicked out of the EU.

Hey Donncha… what urchin code, where? I don’t see it here… Something odd going on?
June 13th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
oh… I see it in IE… how bizarre. Will look into it. Unintentional!
June 13th, 2008 at 3:43 pm
it’s the google analytics WP plugin adding it. Meh. not even sure why I’m using that plugin, must have wanted to try it out at some point!
June 13th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
Should be ok now, thanks Donncha!
June 13th, 2008 at 5:59 pm
Hehe… nice!
Thanks for the mention Frank!

Thanks Deborah, your post put some of my worries about voting No to rest when I got home from the polling station

I can picture you Frank, pacing your bedroom floor all frowned up wondering whether your vote has doomed your country. You must be relieved that you have decided it wont.
June 13th, 2008 at 10:29 pm
You know me so well Edward.
Except I haven’t decided that it hasn’t doomed my country at all, but I’ve decided that in the event it has, then it’s as a result of an undemocratic Europe that I would have issues being a part of anyway.

Well I wont hold you personally responsible if this little nation of ours becomes the backward, isolated outpost it once was.

Actually, I have come to the conclusion that the no vote came through because nobody actually knows anything about the European project at all. How many people know how the EU parliment actually works? (myself included) How many times it convenes? How decisions are made?
‘Europe’ is totally faceless. If they had got there arses in gear, produced a short tv piece explaining what it is they are planning for Europe, with real faces and voices, people would feel less afraid. Who wants to vote for some kind of faceless entity, it’s like voting for the freemasons…

The French fella Domnic de Villepin gave a great lecture about the European project on the BBC’s dimbleby lecture programme. Cant find it online, but it explained a langerload of stuff previously very murky. Why didn’t our government attempt to educate us in this way? They’ve no fucking imagination at all.

Tossers. I’d fire the lot of them.

And then set up my own Government. The TUPPI party. (The Upstanding Peoples Party of Ireland) And we would show lots of films about the EU. Every night between 7 and 10. Accompanied by Beethoven’s ninth, the wendy carlos clockwork orange electronic version. And frank would be my alastair campell PR man, whether he liked it or not.
June 15th, 2008 at 12:01 pm
On second thoughts I might hold you responsible.
June 15th, 2008 at 12:42 pm
I’m with you on everything except holding me responsible Ed…
June 15th, 2008 at 7:17 pm
Yeah, was a bit hungover this morning..

Whew, like Frank I am relieved that my vote did not banish the Irish back to the Hungry Fifties –
what a relief to hear the Italian Foreign Minister say that he believes that Ireland only gave Europe a cold shower.
And even better, the British through their Foreign Secretary today swore to defend us !
Thank God for that with all our Army Officers out on their nearest golf course…

THE BACK TO BRITAIN REFERENDUM MOVEMENT,
Hi Ed,
Frank told us you’ll head up the campaign for us – The British Conservative Party will do ANYTHING for Ireland, we just have to name what we want after how we told the Frogs what to do with Lisbon. Cheers, Michael,
On behalf of the new Southern Irish Gentlemanly Conservative Party.
(Who needs Europe with friends like we have back in the UK !).
