What Hugo Chavez has in common with Adolf Hitler.

Rumsfeld vs Chavez

Check out this extract from a somewhat rambling article by William Blum on CounterPunch.org, it contains a classic quote from Donald Rumsfeld:

If Chávez wins repeated democratic elections … here’s the recent Secretary of State Donald Rumsfeld: “I mean, we’ve got Chávez in Venezuela with a lot of oil money. He’s a person who was elected legally just as Adolf Hitler was elected legally and then consolidated power and now is, of course, working closely with Fidel Castro and Mr. Morales and others.”

There you have it folks.
Chavez -> Democratically Elected.
Hitler -> Democratically Elected.
Therefore Chavez = Hitler.
How could we have not seen it before?

The quote is an old one, from 2006, but I thought it was too good not to share, it reminded me of this old cartoon a bit too. The article I took it from is current, and worth a read - even if it is a bit disjointed and rambly!

William Blum is the author of Rogue State, an extremely readable (if lefty) look at American foreign policy.

    Lost his father at early age, becomes a soldier, leads a failed coup, locked up in comfortables circumstances. Gets democratically elected and changes the flag of his country. Shuts down the oppostion media and introduces enabling legislation. Many leave their country as they can see what is coming.

    I only know of two individuals who match this description.

    Thos who forget the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them

    Blum doesn’t seem to agree with you. That doesn’t mean you’re wrong, but having read some of Blum’s quite well respected work, I’m inclined to lean toward him as the more reliable source… :)

    In hindsight, the comparison may fall down in terms of background….I mean, lets imagine we had Hitler and the Germans in Venezuela rather than Hugo and the Venezuelans……I can well imagine the Venezuelan AK47 Factory under a Speer type, ensuring that millions of guns would be exported onto the streets of NY and donated to the poor people of Ken Livingston’s London.

    We are fortunate that with Hugos record on manufacturing cheap laptops, his guns will probably only be used for internal suppression and the attempted destabilisation of neighbours. The best example of Venezuelan Arms Manufacturing can be seen in their 1970’s attempt to start a Submarine Construction Industry…………Over 20 years and billions of bolivars to try and build the first one…….It is still rusting unfinished to-day.

    Ironic that Rumsfeld’s checklist corresponds closely to his boss and best bud George. See http://www.guardian.co.uk/usa/story/0,,2064157,00.html .

    Why does Chavez order 100,000 AK-103s for an army of 87,500? And then build an AK assault rifle factory? Why does a Brazilian general suggest the country needs to develop a nuclear deterrent?
