Heartbeat Detector – a lot to like, but a lot won’t like it.
November 28th, 2008 by Frank
Bond baddie Mathieu Amalric may result in a few extra rentals for this French movie ‘Heartbeat Detector‘, but Bond it aint.
‘Heartbeat Detector’ has an awful lot to like about it, but it makes it as hard for you to like it as possible.
Nothing much happens, and while what does happen is interesting, it happens over too long a period at too slow a pace and never really resolves itself in any kind of way that is satisfying enough to justify the time spent watching.
This film is at it’s core a simple and possibly controversial analogy which may have overestimated it’s own importance.
I still gave it three stars for the hard and brave directorial style and the fine performances.

I’ve seen some French movies in the past that I found too slow paced and meandering too, and I don’t think it was because I’m more accustomed to Hollywood enertainment or anything! Saying that though, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is excellent and it has Mathieu Almaric too..you should check it out if you haven’t seen it.

The French have a name for it alright, but this one really took it to the limit
I have heard the The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is great, but I’ve kind of avoided it to date because I thought the subject matter seemed so depressing…
I will watch it though.
Thanks Gemma!

I rate it higher than most films despite it’s shortcomings for it’s integrity.
While it may have, for me, failed to get the balance of integrity/entertainment right, it still deserves more recognition for it’s attempt than most of the mindless drivel out there.
So while subjectively one could call it ‘long’, or ‘boring’, I reserve ‘crap’ for films with little or no integrity… like say… Bond.
