Next Batman Villain – The Riddler? Gary Oldman muses…

August 15th, 2008 by Frank

gary Oldman - Commissioner GordonThis week is brought to you by the letter ‘Batman’.

Myself and Eoin have been chatting about where Nolan might take Batman next if he does a third installment. So it was interesting to come across an article where Gary Oldman, who plays Commissioner Gordon, muses that it might not be necessary to recast the Joker seeing as “they’ll have the riddler”

But did he mean that he knew the Riddler was going to be in the next movie or did he mean that theoretically they could go with the Riddler, seeing as he’s another well known Batman villain – or was he mischievously starting rumours for the hell of it?

The article also alludes to the fact that Oldman didn’t really want to be in The Dark Knight but was contractually obliged. Shame, because I think he’s excellent in it and am hoping for more, and better, scenes with him!

But anyway, let’s pretend for a minute that the Riddler IS the next villain, who would you cast? Empire suggest Casey Affleck -oooh, nice choice.

Who would you suggest to play The Riddler?

    What, No Jim Carrey????!

  2. Frank (author) Says:

Ha ha ha… well, let’s not blame Carrey for Schumachers debacle either…!

John McCormac suggested Ed Norton on Twitter. That could be interesting…

  3. Eoin Says:

Not for me. Don’t think Norton could be insignificant enough, if you know what I mean?

  4. Frank (author) Says:

No, don’t get you – why would he have to be insignificant? He could play the highly intelligent but obsessive compulsive criminal who is is own downfall (by leaving complex clues that lead back to himself) brilliantly…

Thing is though, with him having just been Banner in the Hulk, how likely is he to be cast…

  5. Eoin Says:

I think insignificant was the wrong word. What I mean is that Norton, as an actor, sees himself as much more important to the films he is in, than the actor who plays The Riddler in Nolan’s Batman should.

Does that make any more sense? :P

The Hulk will probably stop it from happening alright, although we are probably talking at least 3 years before the next Batman film.

  6. Frank (author) Says:

Yeah, I actually kind of figured out what you meant *after* I posted the question! :P

I still think that could work because it could work in character… but then while I do think Norton’s ego gets in the way of some of his work, i also think he is capapble of great things, and would love to see Batman full of greatness…!

    Johnny Depp
