Science of Sleep

December 15th, 2006 by Frank

Science of SleepGael García Bernal seems to everywhere at the moment. No bad thing, he’s very watchable, turns in some very good performances and girls love him.

Seems he’s starring in Michel Gondry’s new film ‘La science des rêves’ also known as ‘The Science of Sleep’

Michel Gondry directed the quite brilliant ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind‘, which he co-wrote with Charlie Kaufman. Science of Sleep looks to contain some similar elements, but on first look at the trailer it might be that Kaufman’s contribution was the darkness that made Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind so brilliant.

Having said that - this looks excellent as well, just a lot sweeter. But looks can be deceiving, there are hints in the voiceover that seem to indicate all is not sunshine and light.

Science of Sleep seems to be winning a few awards and getting some good reviews.

It won an Audience Award for Best Motion Picture at the Sitges International Film Festival of Catalonia in Spain and an award at the European Film Awards held in Warsaw.

Karina Longworth of Cinematical writes that The Science of Sleep “will certainly frustrate those who want directors to essentially present them with neat little packages, fully contained narratives wrapped with perfect red bows.” David Poland adds the final note, “The Science of Sleep is one of those films you can watch over and over and over again, loaded with gags and gimmicks and spectacularly beautiful and memorable images. It is very imperfect. But damn, is it fun. Gondry is a master of what he does. And you can feel the passion in every frame of the film. .. You really could view any 5 minutes like its own stand alone art project.”

If you haven’t already seen Gondry’s ‘Sunshine of the blah blah blah’, do watch it and if you haven’t seen Gael Garcia Bernal in anything, watch ‘The Motorcycle Diaries‘ where he plays a young Che Guevara.

here’s the trailer to the film, or you could watch it on the official site.
No Irish release date in sight yet.

Looks like another Amelie job to me and what’s with the French accents? If they’re French why don’t they speak French? Another wow, like awesome, so orignial European film for the benighted Americans, IMHO.

  3. martin Says:

No Frank, I don’t want a medal. It’s just handy now that I can keep in touch more often. That was the point, I was trying to be funny, in an unfunny way. Any way, is BifSniff doing anything special for Christmas?

  4. Frank (author) Says:

Feck. I was just having it inscribed for you and all…

Christmas at BifSniff has been hampered somewhat by the recent death of my computer. Also hampered by the fact I’m off on holidays for ages very soon.

However, we might pressgang some guest contributors to sing some carols or something.

Fancy doing a caroling podcast martin?
