A matter of collecting a debt!

June 28th, 2007 by Dave

You know if you have a TV, you must have a TV licence? Well you must, that’s the law. The government spend quiet a few quid sending out inspectors to make sure we all cough up. It’s fair enough really, even if it’s a little expensive. If you are a bold boy or girl however and “forget to pay you licence fee… well then as those expensive ads with Podge and Rodge tell us you can face a fine or even jail. And yes they actually do send people to jail for not paying their licence fee a mere €130 or there about!

But if you are a TD, returning to the bosom of the Fianna Fail party (after being thrown out for the minor matter of facilitating tax evasion) and you own, lets say €2.5m… well then you get your bill halved, your boyfriend pays for it, the tax payer pays the rest and you get a junior ministry! What a country… good job the Greens are there cleaning up the Fianna Fail act.

Whatever about Fianna Fail, we all knew they will do as they please, it’s the Greens that will be interesting to watch over the next 5 years. Their policies show a scary amount of naivety. Take their stance on biofuels, which they are very much for. However biofuels require a mono-crop system, which utterly contradicts their stance on sustainable agriculture. They are also totally against GMOs (for which they give no reason) yet the current crop options for biofuels are not very productive, realtive to oil based products. This can be changed by conventional plant breeding, however this would take quite a long time (many generations of plants). Genetic modification would seem to be the viable option. Will the Greens go for it? Will they sell their souls to the Fianna Fail way, become all Bertified?

I’m far from an environmental expert but I do know they promised to help clean up Irish politics and in particular… But they’re very quiet now and getting excellent at doing well scripted press releases on behalf of their political master.

I’ve been busily working on They Never Froze Walt Disney but it seems like the Greens in government have been an even easier touch for FF than was expected.

If ever there was a news topic crying out for a bifsniff cartoon, this is one.

Now , maybe if we could redirect our TV Licence fee to bloggers, we might get better online connect.

Yeah, I really need to find a way to do a few more cartoons…
