I reckon if you took any average looking girl, plain even, and tarted her up enough, you could make her look good. I had this idea once of taking a wino of the street and giving him a thorough make-over, clothes, hair, skin etc., and then re-introducing him to his old friends to see if they’d recognise him. Not in a nasty way, more of a sort of comment on what society judges by appearances way. However, funding never came through from the Vitners’ Federation of Ireland and the project, unfortunately, never got off the ground (neither did the wino.) Ed, maybe you know some camera man who might help me with this anthropological/social commentary project.

The question is I think – Does the media industry drive our perception of beauty or do they simply respond to what they think we want to see?
Are those in the driving seat of media, advertising and cosmetic companies’ not just normal people who draw on their everyday experiences to come up with new ways to target their consumers?

The media’s function in the west is to maximise profits, you do this by selling to the masses…the masses are morons..
It’s no more complicated than that ..

Maybe it’s just too complicated for you Rich?
To say that the only function of media is to maximise profit is overly simplistic.
Does the media give us what we want- ie reflect what we think as a society is beautiful or as you suggest does it tell us and manipulate our view to create new standards in beauty/desire?
If you think that this is a simple question then it is you are the simple one!

Dave, if I think the question is a hard one, does that make me the hard one?

Yes and if you eat green giant sweetcorn…
It’s really more of a question for your significant other though!

Your a hard one martin rea!

Can we take it you are Martin’s significant other?

Actually Dave, while your question has merit, so does Rich’s answer.
After all, most any media you can think of is beholden to it’s shareholders and therefore driven by profit.
Yes, this focus on profit drives visual media to appeal visually in order to be noticed/bought/watched etc, and beautiful people are part of that visual appeal.
Aesthetically, we like to look at what society norms deem to be ‘beautiful’ people, and as the media strive for further and further beauty the bar is raised on that perceived norm…
But who can argue that the driver is not profit?

It’s actually all about sex. As are all war’s… sex not money is the root of all evil!
