Nicked off Blogorrah
December 18th, 2006 by FrankI try not to just nick things off other sites but to hell with it - just spotted this over at the odd but likable Blogorrah site.
The new U2 video.
It’s clever. You know the video where Tony Blair and George Bush do a duet? Or the one where George Bush sings Sunday Bloody Sunday? Or where George Bush sings Imagine?
Well U2 didn’t use George Bush, but they did use just about every musical icon they could think of and lip synched them so they’re singing U2’s latest. Then they put it up on YouTube.
The band also included themselves in a ‘Where’s Wally’ type way throughout the video.
Clever marketing that. Wonder who came up with the idea. Of course we’ll probably now see a spate of music videos that try to copy popular YouTube ideas.
Next on YouTube: Britney Spears lip-synching to a 14 year old girl’s recording of herself singing Britney Spears’ songs.

Nah, doesn’t do anything for me. People jumping about on stage and singers obviously singing more up-tempo songs just don’t fit in with this slow melodic song.
Do Youtube still have that clause that says anything uploaded to their servers is theirs?

I like U2’s music and most the media they put out is slick to say the least, so when I read your intro I thought ….wow…this’ll be good ….but its not really, is it ?….in fact the best parts are the bits that aren’t synced, or i should say, those parts they didn’t try to lip sync, as they just look amateur in a bad way. Ah well…

I’m with Henry Rollins, on all aspects of U2’s music. Look it up.
As far as the vid is concerned, sloppy effort. As Frank pointed out its been done before.
Take the marketing engine away from the equation and what have you got?
