Liverpool V Chelsea

April 22nd, 2008 by Eoin

It’s semi-final time so it’s Liverpool v Chelsea again. Not sure what else I can say about this tie that I haven’t already mentioned.

The Chelsea team isn’t much different than last season. If anything they are worse. Avram Grant isn’t as good a manager as Jose Mourinho and Malouda isn’t as good a left-winger as Robben. Anelka and Alex are good additions though I suppose.

You may sense a bit of boredom here but it’s only because this is the 19th time in the last 4 years Liverpool have faced Chelsea! Despite that I am looking forward to the game. These teams have produced two of the most memorable nights in the long and illustrious history of Anfield, and tonight promises to be another good one. For different reasons though.

Liverpool have been refused the credit for their achievements in Europe for too long. I mentioned the list of the great teams they had already beaten in my last post. Since then they out played Arsenal to set up this tie with Chelsea. And yet it is Chelsea that are the favourites once more.

Yes Chelsea are above Liverpool in the league but both league games have ended 1-1 - with Liverpool only missing out on the win in Anfield thanks to some assistance from the referee. Beating Chelsea in a fourth consecutive semi-final (Champion’s Leagues 2005 & 2007 and FA Cup 2006) will not bring Liverpool the credit they deserve but there will be much less talk of luck after tonight. I believe Liverpool will prove their worth and finish this tie in the first leg with a 2-0 victory.

Interesting to note Drogba’s not afraid! ;)

Liverpool’s probable team;

Reina
Carragher Hyypia Skertle Aurelio
Mascherano Alonso
Kuyt Gerrard Babbel
Torres
Subs: Itandje, Finnan, Riise, Crouch, Benayoun, Lucas, Pennant

Liverpool co-owner Tom Hicks continues his PR campaign by attending tonight’s game, ignoring warnings from the police in the process. George Gillett will not be able to attend due to illness but has invited representatives from DIC to use his tickets.

Reports indicate that Hicks has until the end of May to find the money to buy out Gillett and that if he fails DIC have an agreement with Gillett to buy. They will have 56 days starting from June 1st to complete the purchase of Gillett’s 50%. I might post more on this issue soon…

Nice highlights thanks. After the shock of the own goal and the outrage I feel by the fouling and elbowing Ch€£$ki got away with I had forgotten about the good football that was played. That was a great bit of skill from Gerrard.

    Thanks for that!

    Bring on the 2nd leg…

[...] 1-0 lead Chelsea had, Liverpool now have to over come the own goal equaliser. I was very confident before this tie that Liverpool would make their 3rd final in 4 years. I predicted a 2-0 first leg victory, but even [...]
