Liverpool Vs. PSV Eindhoven 2nd Leg

April 11th, 2007 by Eoin

Usually the second leg is where the excitement is in the UEFA Champions League, but when it comes to Liverpool Vs. PSV, tonight at 19:45 on Sky Sports 1, it’ll take 3 PSV goals without reply before we get any.

Liverpool won the first leg 3-0 and not only that they were away from home so the 3 goals count for extra. This leaves PSV in the impossible position where they need to score at least 4 and beat Liverpool by 3 or more goals tonight to go through. With Liverpool in Anfield it’s not going to happen. Even if PSV did manage to score 4 goals tonight beating Liverpool by 3 goals aswel is out of the question.

The only way a team can loose a 3-0 lead like this is through over confidence and complacency. Just ask AC Milan! Having done this to Milan themselves Liverpool will know better than to let that happen to them. Of course Koeman is doing his best to make the Liverpool players complacent by rubbishing PSV’s chances and by making it public knowledge that he’s bringing a weakened side.

Having said that this game will not be as easy as the 3-0 advantage suggests. PSV in the first leg were truly awful and did not give a display worthy of the Quarter-Finals of Europe’s elite competition, but they are in the Quarter-Finals and beat Arsenal to get there. They are not as bad as they looked. Their squad size could not handle the injuries they’ve sustained over the last two to three weeks and their confidence has taken a battering after a string of poor results but they are a well organised team and will want to restore some pride.

They may score 2 or even 3 goals tonight. They mey even beat Liverpool but they won’t do enough to go through. If Benitez gets his team right Liverpool should be in for a comfortable evening.

Aurelio is injured and Kuyt is suspended. I expect Benitez to rest one or two players but to still attack PSV and kill this tie off. Gerrard and Carragher seem like obvious choices for a rest but I do not think Liverpool can afford to do without Carragher until the score tonight. Fowler should at least make the bench even though his statistics show he is more useful when he starts with all 7 of his goals this season coming in his 7 starts and no goals when he comes off the bench.

Reina
Finnan Carragher Agger Arbeloa
Pennant Alonso Sissoko Riise
Bellamy Crouch

with Dudek, Hyypia, Gonzalez, Mascherano, Fowler, Gerrard, and Zenden on the bench.

For excitement the neutrals out there should tune into RTÉ 2 from around 19:30 for the second leg of Bayern Munich Vs. AC Milan. That one’s on a knife edge but I’m going to stick with my Bayern Munich prediction despite getting the Chelsea Valencia tie wrong last night. Hey I got Man United right though!
