1,000 free text messages? SPAM!
March 15th, 2007 by Frank
Beware text messages that require you to click on a link - even if they are offering free text messages and look vaguely official!
If in doubt, ring your service provider and check if they are running such a promotion!
Got a ‘Service Message’ type text today from ‘Promo’ which contained a message saying ‘Claim your 1,000 Text Messages! Connect & Collect’ followed by a link.
I had never received a ‘Service Message’ type text before, they come in looking different, and as such might fool you into thinking they are from your service provider. But on calling Vodafone they confirmed it was not from them.
What’s more they advised me to call back on Monday so they could confirm I had not been billed for RECEIVING the message!!! I’m not sure how the hell that could happen, the Vodafone operator was extremely helpful and nice but I was in the middle of something and didn’t have time to chase up the details.
I hope to get more info on Monday when I call to check my Bill.
So don’t be fooled by this type of message - from my chat with Vodafone they reckon if you click on the link you will most likely end up subscribed to a premium rate text service of some kind. I’ll post more info as I get it.
If in doubt call your service provider and ask them if they are running a promotion.
Of course the domain involved was registered through Domains by Proxy, Inc. with GoDaddy… if anyone has any suggestions of how I should proceed, let me know - I’d like to make an official complaint if I can figure out who to complain about!

One of the first things I did with my new phone was change the network settings so it would always ask for a username and password. Those fields are filled in but it means I have to hit another 2 keys before my phone goes online.
As I have absolutely no reason to use my phone for browsing the internet that suits me fine, especially as Meteor made the first two items on the menu into links to online stuff. Grrr.

On a related telephony type topic, I would like to thank you, Frank, for publicising the All Calls Free website which allows users dial abroad for the price of a local call; and as I have an Eircom Bundle with free evening and local calls, I can call all my many friends, lovers and offspring in Germany for free. Brilliant! How do this All Calls For Free crowd make money out of this and why isn’t it more widely known about? Best Patrick’s Day greetings to everyone. Zion!

Oh, and another thing, there’s a room available here from the start of May, rent €300 per month. Yes, we’re offering some lucky individual the opportunity to come and live in the madcap world of the real Martin and Brian, the characters behind the greatest Bifsniff cartoons of all time (don’t just take my word for it- http://bifsniff.com/our-cartoons/music-depreciation or http://bifsniff.com/our-cartoons/auld-lang-syne).
Anyway, if anyone is looking for a gaff give us a call in the evening on 021 4847979. Thanks!
