If you’re stupid like me you might be paying for calls you don’t have to…

July 11th, 2007 by Frank

If you are on Vodafone’s Perfect Fit 400 or 600, made damn sure TODAY that you are NOT paying for calls to other Vodafone numbers – I have been for over a year because I didn’t opt in to a plan I knew nothing about… call customer support and check if you are unsure!

I had a similar problem , yet when I asked why they didn’t notify people automatically , I was told that ‘some people like to be on a more expensive price plan’ (!)

Sounds like a poor marketing excuse for ‘we’ll gouge you if you’re not paying attention’

I was told the data protection laws prhibited them from contacting me, which I couldn’t argue with, except that I’m *almost* certain they’ve called me about other stuff… but I have no hard evidence or even specific memories…

In fairness, I kicked up a small fuss and they did give me a break on a few things… I did have to mention I was considering moving to 3 instead of upgrading…

  4. Paul Browne Says:

Ah , where would we be without 3? Somehow ‘I’m going to move to 02′ doesn’t have the same threat about it.

I’m sure I’ve had texts from Vodafone with marketing offers – so the data protection stuff sounds like a figleaf.

The DPA excuse is bullshit unless you specifically asked them not to contact you about it. Vendors tend to use it as a catch-all excuse these days, despite the fact that they don’t adhere to it when they /are/ supposed to. If you get a DPA excuse tell them you don’t understand and you’d like their Data Protection Officer to explain it to you in detail. Any org the size of Voda has to have one by law and they’ll find it very hard to defend the idiocy you had spouted at you.

:%s/not to contact you about it/not to contact you/

    heh heh heh… interesting.
Have you done that dahamsta? Brilliant.

  8. dahamsta Says:

God no Frank. But I would if I was in that position. The points covered by the DPA are actually very simple when you get beyond the legalese, and although the Commissioner’s website is a bit crap, it actually makes a good job of explaining rights and responsibilities.

It’s worth a half hour of your time to review, as it’ll give you an edge the next time you talk to one of these muppets. Of course it’s also handy for dealing with unsolicited phone calls and mail. If you do, make sure you check out the vendor’s responsibilities too, to see it from their side.
