Nokia 6300 – Screw 3G!

More and more, I hate mobile phones. I’m fucking sick to death of saying ‘hang on, you’re breaking up a bit…’.

And yet I don’t have the balls to adjust my life to live without one, and so it was upgrade time again as the battery on my Nokia 6630 was lasting ten minutes – and anyway, I should have dumped the 6630 ten minutes after I got it, I’ve always hated it.

So what phone should I get?

I met Tom R for coffee while he was reviewing the Nokia N95, and I was impressed. At first I was a bit put off by the size of it – it’s a bit of a brick, but then Tom handed it to me and it was light as a feather… nice. But so what? Who cares if it’s light if it’s so damn big? Well, the reason I began to lust after it was when Tom showed me the camera and video and the screen quality on the phone.

Check out the pic of Tom’s son, taken with the N95. The quality is incredible, the screen on the camera is LOVERLY and the video footage looks incredible…

So I started thinking about whether I would get one. I went to Vodafone and checked the upgrade price. Over €400. I thought about it. I debated with my self. Then i said to myself ‘Over €400. For a phone.’

No. Fucking. Way.

Ies, I’d like one. I’d like someone to give me one for free. But I’m not paying over €400 for one, so after one vain attempt to get Vodafone to give me a better price, I went off to look at phones again, coz I still needed a new one.

Problem is most phones look like crap. I hate them. So I looked, and looked. I wanted to stay with Nokia, but even so i checked out all models available just in case.

Only one phone appealled to me. The Nokia 6300. It’s beautiful. Look at the picture at the top of this post. It’s lovely! It’s so slim – which may be partly due to the fact that it does not have 3G… all the 3G phones seem really fat and chunky.

Hmmm. Do I need 3G. Do I ever use 3G? No. Am i likely to need to? I did a quick ring around and found that none of my friends use 3G – in fact even some of those who have it, turn it off to get longer battery life!

Screw 3G, I now have a nice looking phone. And guess what? On my upgrade plan (where the N95 still costs over €400) it was listed as €49. That’s right, about 12% of the price. And it is almost invisible in my pocket.

I only have the 6300 a few days but already I love it. It’s much more responsive than my old 6630,

There are some niggly little things that annoy me:

  • When i set my alarm, my 6630 used to tell me how many hours it would be before the alarm went off – i liked that. That should be on all alarms.
  • When I sent a text on the 6630, I was brought back to the main text menu. On my new 6300 when the text is sent I remain on the text screen, meaning if I get distracted (it happens a lot) I can look at my screen and think ‘did I send this?’
  • The camera on the 6300 is the only part of the phone that seems LESS responsive than the 6630. It takes a little longer to take a photo and little longer to save it and the quality doesn’t actually seem as good despite being a 2mp camera rather than a 1.3mp camera.

Now, I realise I don’t know a huge amount about phones, and I could probably have used the 6630 for all kinds of cool things if I had wanted, but I know what I like, and I know how I use my phone.

The 6300 has all the usual calendar features and stuff as well, and a couple of nice games including that 3d version of snake and a sudoku game that has an easy level that even I can do.

So if you are an average phone user, you just want to make calls and occasionally take a quick snap of your friends drunk or something then I highly recommend the 6300!

Perfect for the raconteur and gadabout!

Was just forced down the upgrade route due to diminishing battery life too. Got a Sony Ericsson k800 (I left nokia after the N-gage, that’ll learn ‘em to make me look like an idiot).

It’s a bit bulky, but I can pretty much stop carrying a camera, and I like to think I may use 3G at some point in the future (when it’s cheaper)

John Sull: Wow. I do want one of them!

Em: That’s a nice enough looking phone, not all that different on the face – I really hate all these slide phones and flip phones and gimmicky things.

Looks like you have a better camera alright. i just decided in the end that the only use I get out of the camera is for quick snaps, usually just funny shots, or for something I might want to draw later (which of course I never do) and apart from the N95 I haven’t seen camera images yet which were worth hanging on to…

As for 3G, that’s what I was thinking previously, but by the time that happens I’ll probably have to upgrade again anyway…

I think it’s 3 who now do an all you can browse for €20 a month… but that’s still crazy unless you’re practically working through your phone or using it to hook up your laptop…

Of course the N95 has wifi afaik…

    Meh – it’s a slidey one…

Should look at the K750i – excellent phone, decent life and the camera is a cracker – it’s what I use for the blog.

Des speaks sense. K750i is a killer no-nonsense not-too-big phone. Camera is great for on-the-run pictures. I use it for taking notes. Write a note, or reading a paper, take a picture. Bin the paper. Look at it later. MP3 player good too especially if you buy the Sony in-ear earphones.

Up until recently I had a Nokia 6020. It’s a great little phone, pretty basic but it works great and the battery life is fantastic. Recently I decided to step up a level so I treated myself to a Nokia E65. It’s a nice looking phone, small, thin and light. WIFI is great, both for web browsing and using internet phone (truphone being me preference). Other than that I probably don’t really use it to it’s full potential. It has EDGE but the operators are so expensive (I’m with Meteor) that it’s not worth it. The really big downside is the battery life. With my old 6020 I could go 10 days between charges. Now I’m lucky if I get 7 days. If I use WIFI then I need to charge even more regular.

Have to aggree with Des and superboreen, the K750i is a great phone, was using it myself for a good while and never had any problems, using a K550i now however and its a nice upgrade, RSS and ability to post to Blogger.. though i don’t use blogger so that rules that out.. Ability to post to flickr would have been better! Still, nothing beats the K750i, this phone gets ridiculously hot if on the phone for more than ten minutes, and the battery is quiet unstable. Full one minute empty the next. Might have to get it looked at!

The pictures arnt the greatest but the other features such as bluetooth, MP3 and love the blue flashing light when you have missed a called a received a text message..
