A SLIVER OF VOICE WORKSHOP IN CORK

THERE ARE ONLY TWO PLACES LEFT FOR THIS WORKSHOP!

I am helping with the organization of a ‘A Sliver of Voice’ workshop
in Cork for the middle of February. The facilitators are Maia Monaco
and Guillermo Pessoa, from Buenos Aires, Argentina. During the month
of February they will be in Ireland facilitating workshops and
performing their show.

‘A Sliver of Voice’ is a workshop devised by prominent Buenos Aires
performer, poet and singer Maia Monaco which focuses on exploring the
colours, intensities and textures of the voice and on movement and
contemporary dance techniques for expressing music and emotion. Monaco
shares her own devised techniques for sonic meditation, which she
terms ‘the vibration of the infinite voice’, focussing on exercises in
vocal technique and basic guidelines for improvisation that feed the
imagination and amplify hearing.

Incorporating the techniques of Guillermo Pesoa to explore connections
between music and theatrical performance, workshops will enhance the
participants’ abilities to connect music, emotion and movement, and to
improvise instinctively from music.

The workshop begins with bodily warm-ups and stretches to improve
awareness of posture, relaxation and responsiveness. They then move on
to exercises in vocal technique and basic guidelines of improvisation.
Different vocal qualities are explored such as ‘the voice in repose’,
the voice in speech’, ‘the animal voice’, ‘the agitated voice’, ‘the
ritual voice’, with emphasise on breath and pulse as the basis of the
voice, employing percussion accompaniment. Pesoa will introduce basic
principles of musical analysis and composition; exploring music-based
performance through a series of physical and vocal tasks and exercises
based on rhythmic units, music dynamics, music structure and tempo.

THERE ARE ONLY TWO PLACES LEFT FOR THIS WORKSHOP!

WINTER 2009 IMPROV IN DUBLIN
A NEW SIX-PART, CRAIC-FILLED, INTENSIVE WORKSHOP WITH JOHN DAWSON

Improvisation develops a performer’s confidence and spontaneity,
making them more reactive or ‘in the moment’. In addition to being a

characters, develop original material and as part of a rehearsal
process to explore written text for auditions and plays.

In this workshop, performers will collaborate and work step-by-step
through a process that includes games and exercises that develop and
fine-tune intuitive skills with an emphasis on creating truthful and
emotionally-full characters. The elements of narrative such as plot,
theme, conflict and resolution are emphasized and explored so that
story-telling skills are developed.

The workshop concludes with a live performance in a Dublin city centre venue.

WHEN: Six workshop classes, starting on Monday, February 9th
(No class on March 16th due to St. Patricks Day bank holiday. Final
workshop on Monday, March 24th)
TIMES: 7:15PM to 10:15PM
WHERE: Smithfield/Stoneybatter area, Dublin 7
COST: 185.00 Euro (170.00 Euro for full-time drama students and 3 or
more members of a troupe or theatre company)

To enroll, a 95.00 Euro non-refundable deposit is required before Feb. 2nd

John Dawson has studied, written and acted with numerous theatre
companies and comedy troupes including N. America’s famous Second
City, the forerunner of Saturday Night Live. John works

Maeve Higgins – Kitten Brides with special guests Pappy’s Fun Club

Maeve Higgins’ sweetly gentle delivery disguises a sharp wit. In this
whimsical stand-up show, she chats rapidly to the audience about her
hometown in Ireland, her cat and her travels around to Australia.

Deliberately air-headed, Higgins has a fine ability to present her
material as though straight off the cuff, appearing easily distracted,
but with a twinkle to her talk. Despite the deceptively dappy persona,
her material is wry and amusing, causing the audience to chuckle
throughout, with a few outbreaks of near hysteria.

An air of quirkiness pervades the whole show. A random doll’s house
sits on stage, but is used only to prop up various enlarged photos of
her cat and his unnervingly blank expression.

The comic highlight is her dramatic enactment of the three alternate
reunion scenarios that she envisages to cope with a traumatic
break-up. Her self-consciously awkward acting adds to the humour of
the scenes, in which the ill-fated ex-boyfriend is struck down
repeatedly by her conspicuous success.

With her playful energy, sharp claws and flights of fancy, Higgins
proves herself an accomplished and appealing comedienne.

Maeve Higgins is a firebrand. Well, more like a sparkler. She is
controversial and doesn’t care who gets hurt. Except that she does
really.
Since beginning stand up four years ago, she has performed in comedy
festivals around the world, including Edinburgh, Melbourne, Adelaide
and Kilkenny.

In her 2006 debut show, ‘Ha Ha Yum’, at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival,
Maeve did stand-up while her sister Lilly made cakes. The show went on
to a season in Dublin’s prestigious Andrews Lane Theatre, followed by
a sold-out stand-up tour around Ireland. In 2008, the show was invited
to Melbourne for their comedy festival. In between that, Maeve wrote
and performed two more solo show in 2007 and is set to bring her brand
new show ‘Kitten Brides’ to the Edinburgh festival this year.

Maeve rapidly rose to an uncomfortable level of notoriety on Irish
television in the past three years, on the most watched comedy show in
the country, RTE’s Naked Camera. She is also a regular contributor to
the Ray D’arcy show on Today FM.
“Throughout the whole hour the room is filled with laughter at
Maeve’s risqué and highly intelligent act.” The Irish Independent,
‘Charming and iconoclastic Irish stand-up’ The Age, Melbourne 2008
“Higgins is a great relief from the big loud boys and will win many
people over with her quietly charming quality of comedy.” The Skinny,
2007
“Maeve Higgins is here to demonstrate how to do Irish charm. She’s
not daft, she doesn’t lay it on with a trowel, dimpling and twinkling
away, hers is probably the most natural and uncontrived performance
you could wish for.” Chortle, 2007

A Sliver of Voice Performance

The result of a long process of investigations by the Buenos Aires
actress and singer Maia Monaco, ‘A Sliver of Voice’ presents its
audience with a rich sonic tapestry of fleeting impressions and
textured, mesmeric sound that explores the limits of theatre, poetry
and music in perpetual feedback. Without relying on any technological
devices beyond an old tape-recorder and with minimal scenic elements,
the vocalist and lyricist Maia Monaco and the composer Guillermo Pesoa
have created a richly resonant soundscape, without conventional plot
but luring the audience into forming their own images and
associations.

No Exit
3 people, a living room which could have been designed by Picasso and
an intriguing valet form the frame of this One Act Play, full of witty
and sarcastic dialogues
Written by the French writer Jean Paul Sartre just after the second
world war, this adaptation of the play is amazingly modern due
especially to its razor sharp dialogues.
Meant to be a dark psychological comedy, and with quotes such as “So
all is for the best, you see, the war is over, my wife’s dead and I’ve
carved out my place in history” or “Hero or Coward it’s all the one,
provided he kisses well”, this play will leave you surprised,
astonished or pensive, but certainly won’t let you indifferent…

MacBeth…Almost!
Transforms a Shakespeare drama into One of the funniest Comedy ever!
Shakespeare’s most famous tragedy has been transformed into a One Act
Comedy… Ancient prophecies and modern conveniences lead to murder,
mayhem and madness (literally!).

Endorsing the light side of Comedy, the frenetic witty dialogues will
bring tears in your eyes…from laughing!

publisher, The Godot Company return to Ireland with a production
featuring actor Henry Woolf. ENDGAME will tour the country for five
weeks, with a six-night run at the Everyman Palace Theatre.

In a tiny house by the sea, the last survivors on earth toy with fears
and illusions of a possible change, all the while sensing the
inevitability of their end. Grim and bleak and yet monstrously funny,
ENDGAME is a play fraught with contradictions.

The Godot Company make a highly anticipated return to Ireland
following their critically acclaimed production in 2006 of WAITING FOR
GODOT. The national tour of ENDGAME opens fittingly in Potora Royal
School in Enniskillen, where Samuel Beckett and Oscar Wilde were
educated.
The cast features Henry Woolf, longtime friend and collaborator of
Harold Pinter. Woolf commissioned and directed Pinter’s first play THE
ROOM in 1957 and has worked with some of the greatest actors of the
20th century including Laurence Oliver and Orson Welles. In 2007 Henry
Woolf appeared in the National Theatre’s production of Pinter’s THE
HOTHOUSE alongside Peter Pacey, who also stars in the forthcoming tour
of ENDGAME.

ENDGAME by Samuel Beckett is Directed by Tony Rohr, with a cast
featuring Peter Pacey as Hamm, Henry Woolf as Clov, Collette Kelly as
Nell, and Royston Kean as Nagg.

ENDGAME is at the Everyman Palace Theatre from Monday 16th – Saturday
21st February at 8pm, Tickets €25 / €20 conc. / €15 OPENING NIGHT / €7
students Monday – Wednesday.
