Auditions
—————————————————————————————————————————————–

Upcoming audition for Blackthorn Theatre Company’s latest production,
a modernized version of William Shakespeare’s “The Tragedy of Hamlet”.

Location: Ballinlough Youth Hall (Ballinlough Community Centre).
Directions available on request.
Date: Saturday, 30th August.
Time: 3pm to 6pm.
Other information: This production is an updated version of
Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Hamlet. Our take on Hamlet updates the
setting to a modern one without changing the dialogue. In our
production, we transform the bard’s characters into modern-day Cork
social stereotypes (Hamlet as an “emo”, Rozencrantz and Guildenstern
as snobby private-schoolers, Claudius as an underhanded politician,
etc). The play is scheduled to be performed in the Cork Arts Theatre
during the last week of January ‘09. Actors of all ages and genders
are required.

Contact details: Email blackthorntheatrecompany@gmail.com.
Alternatively, the play’s director Seán Creagh is available at 086
0819387. In all cases please contact us in advance so that we can
provide you with the audition piece.

Casting and Extras Co-ordination
The Eclipse
Rainwater Films, Rushbrooke Commercial Centre, Cobh. 2008

Last Chance To Be An Extra!

“The Eclipse” is shooting in Cobh between September 1st and October 3rd 2008.
See bottom for information on the film.

I am hosting a final call for Extras this Thursday August 28th, 4 -
7pm, in The Jack Doyle Room, at The Commodore Hotel, Cobh.

In particular I am looking for men and women in their 40’s, 50’s,
60’s, 70’s… and/or close to retirement age. The film is set at a
Writers Festival. One of the featured novelists writes ghost stories
and I am looking for interesting faces to add character and atmosphere
to the stunning gothic setting of Cobh Cathedral.

We particularly welcome faces with unusual features that hint at other
worlds; noses headed west, missing or black teeth, wild hair or big
eyes… faces full of character that tell us a story or hint at an
interesting life just by looking at them! This might be the
poet-muse-intellectual look or the country-just-down-from-the-hills
look. We welcome you to join us on Thursday night at The Commodore in
Cobh!

Extras are often needed for one day or occasionally two or three days.

Extras are paid €80 a day or €40 for a half day.

The film is directed by Conor McPherson and produced by Robert Walpole
of Treasure Films.

Below is a short introduction to the film:
Michael Farr has started to wonder if his life adds up. He has a
beautiful wife, Eleanor, and two great kids Sarah and Tom. He is a
respected schoolteacher in his local school and an active member of
his local community but somehow he’s beginning to ask himself
questions about the meaning of it all. Growing up in small town
Ireland he and his close friends had dreams of greatness and breaking
free of their hokey small-town roots. Under the spell of local artist
Malachy, they held boozy artists gatherings where they read aloud
great literature and sometimes shared their own fumbling imitations of
their heroes. In those days they were all going to go on to great
things and build adoring audiences for their work. In the way of these
things their youthful dreams have passed and now in middle age their
writers group has evolved into the town’s annual literary festival.
Michael and his friends from the early days are members of its
unwieldy committee, all their dreams of being writers subsumed into
the harsh reality of keeping their lives on track and paying the
bills. At least the annual festival gives them the chance to rub
shoulders with what they might have been in another life, the life of
their youthful dreams…
The Eclipse marks the first cinematic collaboration between two of
Ireland’s leading writers Billy Roche (The Wexford Trilogy,
Cavalcaders, Trojan Eddie) and Conor McPherson (The Weir, Dublin
Carol, The Seafarers, I Went Down, Saltwater, The Actors) who co-wrote
the screenplay which is based on a short story from Billy Roche’s
recently published collection Tales From Rainwater Pond. The film will
be Conor McPherson’s fourth as a director after Saltwater, Endgame and
The Actors.

Magic Moments

“Let us light a fire in your heart. Let us come up behind you, tap you
on the shoulder and whisper a secret. The world can change in a
moment. A magic moment. One minute of delight and danger a day, every
day of the Fringe. Keep watching. We’ll find you.”

Project Brand New’s next outing is something slightly different.
We are inviting proposals for a 60 second piece whose sole function is
to stimulate and inspire its audience. And this time round, we are not
offering any technical support. No theatre, no lights. Just you, an
audience, and your imagination.
We challenge you to make something heartfelt and simple.
16 pieces. Each one 60 seconds long.
One a day for each day of the Fringe Festival, Sept 6th-21st.

They will be performed anywhere in the city associated with the
Fringe. Box-office, venues, offices, foyers, clubs. Morning, evening,
for one person, for a hundred people or for a shadow on a wall. They
will appear, happen, and disappear. All in the space of one minute.
A Magic Moment.

So, in 500 words, tell us what you would like to make. You can submit
as many ideas as you like.

Tell us exactly what will happen.
Tell us exactly how you will make it happen.
Tell us for whom it will happen.
Tell us which week of the Fringe would suit you better.
And include a short biog so we know a little about you.

Pieces, as always, will be assessed under the following criteria:

•the artistic quality of your idea
•the scope of your ambition
•the practical needs of your idea

Closing date for submissions is Aug. 29th.

Email your proposal to projectbrandnew@gmail.com by 5pm on Aug 29th.

And don’t forget to include your contact details
Remember!
60 seconds. It must happen within 60 seconds.
Perhaps you could start like this?

Dear Project Brand New,

I have an idea…

Theatre Makers as part of Dublin Fringe Festival ‘08 Presents

They Never Froze Walt Disney
By Jody O’Neill

A chilling tale of romance, remorse and refrigeration in rural Ireland

Monday 8 to Saturday 13 September at Players Theatre, Trinity College
at 6.15pm. Directed by Jack Healy, this darkly comic piece traces
the lives of Marie (Jody O’Neill) and Paudie (Gavin Logue) from 1960’s
to present day, flashing between their first encounters and the highly
suspicious circumstances that reunite them many years later.

Jody O’ Neill and Gavin Logue are graduates of the now defunct
Bachelor in Acting Studies, Trinity College. Jody is co-curator of
Project Brand New, has written for Fishamble, Tall Tales and Magnet
Productions and recently finished filming for Season Six of The
Clinic.

Theatre Makers, based in Cork, is a company committed to developing
new ways of facilitating the actor’s art. They Never Froze Walt
Disney, the company’s first production, premiered in June 2007 as part
of the Cork Midsummer Festival where it was warmly received by
audiences and critics alike.

“…the comedy is assured, beautifully pointed…” (Irish Times)
“…sparkling black comic dialogue…” (Irish Examiner)

Theatre Makers recently had success in Cork Midsummer Festival 2008
with Aesop’s Fabulous Foibles and Fables.

Preview 8 September at 6.15pm, matinee 12 September at 2.30pm. Tickets
are priced at €15, €12.50 and €10 (preview and matinee) and are

MERIDIAN THEATRE COMPANY presents

“Beaten” by Ailis Ni Riain

Ailis Ni Riain’s post-postmodern play “Beaten” is a re-working of her
debut success, Tilt. Think Sarah Kane, early Edward Bond, with Pat
McCabe thrown in, and you’re close to feeling the imaginative punch of
this inventive play. Savage humour, searing performances, a moody
sound score and lighting and direction by Tony McCleane-Fay combine to
make this a riveting theatrical experience. “Beaten” runs at the
Granary Theatre from September 10th to 20th.

Set “in the bowels of County Cork,” Beaten is a fast and furious play
about revenge, retribution and reconciliation and dramatises the
relationship between a grieving young girl, her two lost brothers and
their long-gone, but ever-present, Dada.

Ailis is also a composer, and working closely with Granary director
Tony McCleane-Fay, she has re-worked an intensely musical piece in
which the brute realities of emotional violence are treated with such
grace and lyrical intensity that the dark materials of family trauma
became an elegant vocal symphony.

“Ni Riain has constructed a thing of haunted beauty and inherent
musicality. Each rapid-fire phrase pummels the air in a series of
blistering crescendos, passed around the family like a choral
litany.….It’s an elegy of their own lost lives, ….fuelled by love and
anger.” - Glasgow Herald.

Beaten is performed as part of Blood + Bandage, a new festival
designed to support and foster new plays and new forms of theatre
emerging in Cork. Based in the Granary Theatre, this first annual
festival features work by Meridian, Granary Theatre and Be Your Own
Banana and showcases three Cork pieces developed in the city in the
past two years.

“Beaten” runs at the Granary Theatre from September 10 to 20 (Previews
8 & 9 Sept, 8pm Nightly. Ticket Prices: €15 & €10 conc. (All Previews
€10) and booking is on 021 490 4275 or in person at Granary Box Office

The Blood + Bandage Festival also features “Thailand: What’s Love Got
To Do With It?” by Máirtín de Cógáin & Brian Desmond which opens at
the Granary Studio on September 10th and the World Premiere of “There
are Little Kingdoms” by Kevin Barry, which opens on September 24th.
