Blackthorn Theatre Company Presents
“PRISONERS”
By Luke Field
Cork Arts Theatre
15th-16th August
@ 8pm
Tkts €10
Bookings call 021-4505624
“Prisoners” is the story of a bank heist in small-town Ireland. The
robbers are there on behalf of a shady socialist organisation, and
battle lines seem clearly drawn at first. But when things go wrong and
a hostage situation develops due to the Gardaí laying siege to the
bank, everyone starts questioning which side they’re on. Loyalty,
cynicism, and opportunism constantly struggle for supremacy in an
explosive play littered with tension, action and some dark comedy.
Blackthorn Theatre Company was formed initially by members of PBC
Cork’s 2008 production of Brian Friel’s “Philadelphia, Here I Come!”.
We are a group of writers, actors and directors based in Cork City and
county. Prisoners is Blackthorn’s maiden project, an in-house script
written by Luke Field.

GALLOGLASS THEATRE COMPANY PRESENTS
TOP GIRLS
by Caryl Churchill
GALLOGLASS THEATRE COMPANY has great pleasure in announcing that its
next production will be TOP GIRLS, by the celebrated British
playwright Caryl Churchill.
DO you remember the 1980’s? DO you remember Margaret Thatcher?
Caryl Churchill’s iconic play, TOP GIRLS, mixes fantasy and reality,
history and heresy to bring you the story of Marlene. A bit too old to
be a “girl”, with a healthy taste for whisky, Marlene has just been
promoted at work. In a world where men are the employers, where do
children and warmth and vulnerability have a place? And if you must
give them up, what are the consequences? TOP GIRLS is a deeply human
and moving examination of feminist values in the home, in the
workplace, and in our past and the contrast between a celebration of
capitalism and the individual and socialism and the collective. TOP
GIRLS is sometimes political, sometimes hilarious, but always
painfully true.
Michael Billington, Theatre Critic for The Guardian said “The work
builds to a superb emotion-draining climax that sent me out of the
theatre convinced that this is the best British play ever from a woman
dramatist”.
Jason Byrne, one of Ireland’s most talented and accomplished young
directors, will direct TOP GIRLS. He has most recently directed Loose
Canon’s production of PHAEDRA’S LOVE and also ROMEO AND JULIET at the
Abbey Theatre, the latest in an impressive line of his successes at
that Theatre. Jim Myers of Galloglass said “We are delighted to be
working with Jason Byrne on this production. Caryl Churchill is
recognised internationally as a distinguished and brilliant
playwright, possessing incisive intelligence, wit and emotion, and I
am confident that Jason is the person to explore the resonances of
this inspired and exceptional play for a contemporary audience”.
The cast of seven features KATE NIC CHONAONAIGH, JANICE BYRNE, LESLEY
CONROY, LIZ FITZGIBBON, ELAINE FOX, LOUISE LEWIS, and NYREE
YERGAINHARSIAN. The set and costume designer is ALYSON CUMMINS and
lighting designer is SARAH JANE SHIELS.
TOP GIRLS opens at The Granary Theatre, on August 25th and runs until
August 30th.

Meridian & Granary Theatre present
Blood and Bandage: A Festival of New Theatre created in Cork
Blood and Bandage is a new festival designed to support and foster new plays
and new forms of theatre emerging in Cork. Based in the Granary Theatre,
this first annual festival features work by Meridian, Granary Theatre and Be
Your Own Banana and showcases three Cork pieces developed in the city in the
past two years.
Meridian’s There Are Little Kingdoms by Kevin Barry is a comic cruise
through a day in the life of an unnamed Irish town. We have pool hall
legends, wife-swapping Casanovas, prescription drugs, fast girls looking for
faster cars, a broken windscreen, a dislocated shoulder, not to mention the
taxi-driver who can tell you how you’ll die or the quare fella running the
chipper who does a savage turn at Roy Orbison. Barry’s sparkling adaptation
of his award-winning book of short stories is the darkest funniest portrait
of small-town Irish life to have emerged in years.
Beaten by Ailis Ni Riain is a serious re-working of Ni Riain’s debut success
Tilt. Set “in the bowels of County Cork”, Beaten is a fast and furious play
about revenge, retribution and reconciliation and dramatises the
relationship between a grieving young girl, her two lost brothers and their
long-gone but ever-present Dada. Working closely with Granary Director Tony
McCleane-Fay, Ni Riain, who is also a composer, has re-created an intensely
musical piece in which the brute realities of emotional violence are treated
with such grace and lyrical intensity that the dark materials of family
trauma become an elegant vocal symphony.
Thailand: What’s Love Got To Do With It? by Brian Desmond and Mairtin de
Cogain was a sell-out success in the Cork MidSummer Festival 2007. A
hilarious romp through the brothels of Pattaya, this savage satire on Irish
sex tourism is being showcased here and will tour nationally with the
support of Meridian Theatre Company. Featuring the legendary Mairtin de
Cogain, Thailand is a no holds barred account of cheap thrills in exotic
places. Buzzing with wit and sly intelligence, it also cheerfully slams a
culture closer to home where everything has a price and hardly anything has
value.
In addition to the productions, the festival will also include workshops and
readings of works in progress. These will continue after the festival with
the intention of developing projects for future festivals.

ART EXHIBITIONS
————————————————————————————————————–
Piedescalso Art Cafe invites you to
Tom Campbell
an exhibition of paintings & drawings
“I have been passionate about art since childhood. I think an artist
should be humble and always strive to make ‘better work’. Picasso said
that, ‘a painting is an act of war’. I like the passion in that
statement but I think art is an act of love and peace, an act that can
unite and inspire, unlike the destructive results of war. I am not so
interested in talking about the work I have made, I would prefer to
concentrate on the work I will make. I will be an artist until I die.”

Exhibition runs till end of August
Piedescalso Art Cafe
78 Thomas street

Mon-Sat 10am-10pm
Many of you might already know that we are leaving Ireland at the end
of the month and will be passing on the cafe. This is our last opening
so do come and enjoy a glass of wine with us for this beautifully
inspiring occasion. We will be telling you more about the move in the
next week!
Come and enjoy!
