Group and ‘one on one’ sessions with UK Clown and street theatre
director John Lee:

Cork Circus is offering another opportunity for performers in Cork to
gain from the gentle clown genius that is John Lee. His previous
visits been hugely successful and rewarding to all who participated.
John Lee has performed and directed ’street theatre’ around the world
for over 20 years.

John Lee will be offering clown workshops as part of ‘Circus Festival
Ireland’ over the weekend of the 15th to 17th of Feb. Then he is
staying until Wednesday the 20th of Feb to offer more workshop
opportunities. There will be a limited number of ‘one to one’
sessions (3hrs in duration) during the day on Monday, Tuesday and
Wednesday. This is a really unmissable opportunity for any performer
or group that have a ‘piece’ or charactor they wish workshoped.

Also, John Lee is running two evenings of clown training along the
lines of previous classes run in Cork city, but pushing us on!! This
class is open to up to 15 participants and will run on Monday the 18th
and Tuesday the 19th of Feb, from 6pm to 9pm. The two nights will be
linked, so only people who can commit to both nights should apply.

John Lee is talking about using the two sessions to explore the idea
of ‘disguise clown’, where a ‘normal’ looking (to the public)
situation or scenario is setup and then reality is stretched, twisted
and thrown out the window!! This technique is most commonly used on
the street but can equally be adapted for a theatre space, normally
involving the action leaving the stage!

Numbers are limited so get back to me soon.

Venue to be announced. If anyone knows of an available and cheap space
do let me know! ASAP!!

The two sessions, six hours in total will cost €80 (believe me! This
is a subsidised rate, thanks to John and Cork Circus)

Project Brand New : Call for Submissions
What will you make?

Project Brand New is a new initiative for the performing arts at
Project Arts Centre. It exists to provide a framework for theatre,
dance, music and live art practitioners to develop new work for the
stage outside the traditional production model. We are offering you
the opportunity to test out ideas at a developmental stage in an
informal environment, where audience feedback and discussion is key.
At the heart of this project is the ambition to provide a platform for
innovation and experimentation, and work that strives towards the new.
Project Brand New will serve as a springboard to push you, as artist
and spectator, in new directions.

Here’s how it works:

Over three nights in March (19, 20, 22 March) Project Cube will play
host to 8-12 new works made by you. These works can be up to twenty
minutes long. You can make whatever you like. You can use a video
projector, a play-back sound system and anything else you can get in
and out of the space in a ten minute turn around . We are excited to
see what can be created when the focus is more on the people making
the work than on the technical requirements we sometimes can be
constrained by.

If you are interested, all you have to do is submit your ideas to us.
We ask for a brief description of your idea and where you would like
to take it, in no more than 500 words, and a biography detailing your
previous work as an artist.

Submissions will be assessed under the following criteria:
The artistic quality of your idea
The scope of your ambition
The practical needs of your idea

We are: Róise Goan, Louise Lowe, Jody O’Neill and Deirdre Roycroft,.
Once we have selected the successful submissions for Project Brand
New, we will work with you to assist you in bringing your ideas to
fruition.

This is a not-for-profit venture, where all the participants time and
resources, including Project Arts Centre, are being offered free of
charge. We do not have any additional budget for props or equipment.

Please submit your application by 5pm on Friday 8 February to
projectbrandnew@gmail.com or in person to Project Arts Centre. Please
remember to include a contact phone number and email address.

Cork Opera House and Cyclone Repertory Company present Romeo and
Juliet & The Merchant of Venice

Inspired by glowing notices from critics and audiences, Cork Opera
House and Cyclone Repertory Company are sending their fast-paced and
funny repertory productions of Romeo and Juliet and The Merchant of
Venice on a tour of southern Ireland.

The tour begins on 21 January with a revival in the Half Moon Theatre,
and then continues to the Belltable, Limerick; Siamsa Tire, Tralee;
Garter Lane, Waterford; and Glor, Ennis. More venues will be
announced.

Shakespeare’s coming to southern Ireland with guns blazing! Romeo and
Juliet is set in the wild, wild west of 1846, where the feud between
the Capulets and Montagues is cowboy-style, complete with chaps, spurs
and ten gallon hats.

The same ensemble of five actors will perform a commedia dell’arte
version of The Merchant of Venice set in 16th century Venice. This is
Shakespeare as you’ve never seen him, complete with pie fights, and a
slapstick, bawdy style brimming with zany comedic energy.

Peadar Donohoe directs both productions, which aim to provide an
imaginative introduction to Shakespeare for young audiences. They have
a comedic spin that grabs and keeps their attention, while remaining
true to the spirit of the plays.

“We have fun with the text but we don’t make a farce of the plays’
conclusions and themes,” says Director Peadar Donohoe, who is Artistic
Director of the Cork based Cyclone Theatre Company. “We intend for
them to be enjoyable, understandable and fun.”

Gaiety School of Acting Cork , Amnesty International and Cork Stop Sex
Trafficking Campaing are happy to inform that:

Due to the wonderful response we got to our performances last weekend,
we have decided to give FLESH another viewing in The Firkin Crane.

Extra Performances February 8th, 9th, 10th , 8pm, The Firkin Crane

Review in the Sunday Tribune, 13/01/08:

‘extraordinarily challenging…balances moments of humor and terror,
banality and sickening violence to great effect…burns it’s way
indelibly into the consciousness… Flesh is inherently bleak AND
insistently captures your attention’

NEW PLAY ON SEX TRAFFICKING IN CORK

Flesh is a disturbing and shocking play directed by Stella Majewsky
that exposes the human cost of sex trafficking and explores the
experiences of both victims and abusers. The Cork Gaiety School of
Acting Adult Theatre Company, in co-operation with Amnesty
International and the Campaign Against Sex Trafficking, is staging the
play at the Firkin Crane, Shandon, Cork on 8 th, 9th, 10th February.

All performances start at 8pm.

“A powerful piece of theatre has the capacity to change people, subtly
alter their attitudes, help them to understand aspects of the human
experience, and even empower them to change,” said Stella Majewsky.

“With this play I wanted to explore the suffering of the victims, but
also the motives of the ‘clients’, the users of trafficked women who
are the ones who make it such a profitable enterprise for criminal
organisations.”

Noeleen Hartigan Amnesty International Irish Section said: “Two
centuries after the formal abolition of slavery trafficking in human
beings remains a serious problem and all indications are that it is a
growing one from which Ireland is not immune.

“Trafficking involves the coercion and exploitation of the victim,
which continues after the victim arrives at his or her final
destination. Women and children, mainly trafficked for the purposes of
sexual exploitation or domestic labour, are vulnerable to extreme
violence by traffickers, pimps and clients. This play is an
opportunity for audiences to see the true cost of trafficking in the
shattered lives and minds of the victims.”

All profits from the play will go to the Campaign Against Sex
Trafficking and Amnesty International.

Tickets cost €10,-, € 7.50 concession, and can be purchased from 1890 258 358

For further information:
From the Cork Gaiety School of Acting Adult Theatre Company:Stella
Majewsky, Artistic Director, 087-277 20 29

Some comments from audience members
‘I am from Prague originally. Sex trafficking is a part of daily life
there. The play reminded me of the many times I had a lucky escape.’

‘ The powerful thing about it is that it all seems so normal. There is
no big drama; they are all just normal human beings. I really want to
do something to help.’

‘I go to more than 200 plays a year. This ranks with the most powerful
performances I have ever seen.’

‘ Half way through the play, I just wanted to go on stage and beat the guys up.’

Skylight productions presents

Wait Until Dark
by Frederick Knott

An innovative, highly entertaining and suspenseful thriller about a
blind housewife, Susy Hendrix (Joy Buckle) as she is terrorized by a
group of criminals who believe she has hidden a baby doll used by them
to smuggle heroin into the country. Alone in her apartment and cut-off
from the outside world, Susy must fight for her life against a gang of
ruthless criminals, (Conor Dwane, Ian McGuirk), led by the violent,
psychotic Roat (Alf McCarthy).

The tension builds as Roat, aided by his gang impersonates police
officers and friends of her husband in order to win Susy’s confidence,
gaining access to her apartment to look for the doll.

The climax of the Play, a violent physical confrontation between Susie

From the producers of The Sunbeam Girls
Cork Opera House and Stage Centre present the Irish premiere of

The Good Sisters (”Les Belles-soeurs”)
by Michel Tremblay
Directed by Marion Wyatt @ the Half Moon Theatre

The Good Sisters is a hilarious comedy that offers something for
everyone: for lovers of history, lovers of Cork, lovers of in-laws,
lovers of inexpensive evenings of entertainment…

It’s the north side of Cork in 1965, and Geraldine Lawlor has won a
million Green Shield stamps – the 60s equivalent of striking it rich
in the Lotto. She invites the neighbours round for a stamp-licking
party.
While Geraldine dreams of things she’s always wanted and can now buy
for herself, her sisters and friends become jealous.

Geraldine has big plans for it all, even as she doesn’t see the
resentment and bitterness that’s swirling around her.

Thrown into this wacky group is Geraldine’s daughter, Linda, who,
going through the dramatic changes of a misunderstood teenager, needs
help dealing with her mother, and invites her friend Lucy to the
house. But Lucy, being newly pregnant, needs advice too. The Good
Sisters is a family drama with wild and raucous action and an homage
to that greatest of working class passions: bingo!

As the evening unfolds the women share stories – most funny, some
outrageous and others simply sad - and the night comes to an explosive
end. A night of hilarious and moving theatre chock full of Cork
humour and characters.

This late-’60s Canadian play has been transported to a Cork city
setting, by the play’s director, Marion Wyatt. Stage Centre has
assembled a terrifically talented cast of fourteen, to portray the
really desperate housewives in this moving and funny story about a
woman.

From Thurs 14th Feb
Shows at 8.30pm
Come and spend an entertaining evening with the ‘good’ sisters…
Tickets: €25 plus €2.50 booking fee (school groups exempt)
