Theatre Maker’s Working Actors’ Workshop presents
Aesop’s Fabulous Foibles and Fables
At the Half Moon Theatre
Mon 27 Oct, 3pm
Tues 28 – Sat 31 Oct, 11am & 3pm
A midterm treat for children and families based on Aesop’s famous
fables. This show, which premiered at Cork Midsummer Festival, had
everyone laughing non-stop, including (maybe most of all!) the adults
in the audience.
From The Boy Who Cried Wolf to The Tortoise and the Hare to The Wolf
in Sheep’s Clothing, Aesop parades before us a circus of foolish and
funny human traits as colourful and varied as the menagerie of animals
(including the human) that he uses to communicate them.
See these characters brought to hilarious life, with all their too
familiar faults and failings. Suitable for anyone 4 years and older.

Granary Theatre Presents: New Director’s Festival:
DUCK
by Stella Feehily / directed by Laura Daly
Granary Theatre | 24 October – 01 November 2008 | 8pm | €12/€8
Director’s Note
I first discovered Duck in a Drama and Theatre Studies lecture hall.
Its potential immediately struck me. I was thrilled to get the
opportunity to direct it for The New Director’s Festival. It is a
hard-hitting, unapologetic piece that is crammed to the brim with
every social and cultural problem imaginable that is coming to the
fore in a post Celtic Tiger Ireland. My approach to the work has been
to focus on the characters. At times their circumstances may seem
unreal or inaccessible to a theatre going audience but my aim has been
to offer an image of fully developed, deep characters that the
audience is forced to identify with as their realities are portrayed
with truth and honesty. Cat and Sophie strive for something more in
their lives but they are caught in a cycle that is endlessly turning
and though they attempt to start a new and to take their first flight
it seems that the cycle will simply start to turn again and Cat and
Sophie will remain forever two ducks out of the water. This play will
slap you in the face, unsettle and unnerve….but sure why else would
you go to the theatre?!

THE PRODUCERS OF ‘TWELVE ANGRY MEN’ AND ‘THE ODD COUPLE’ RETURN WITH:
‘THE DRESSER’ BY RONALD HARWOOD
STARRING ALF MCCARTHY AND CONOR DWANE
Tuesday 11 – Saturday 22 November
The Everyman Palace Theatre is delighted to announce the return of
Skylight Productions with Ronald Harwood’s classic play THE DRESSER in
mid-November. The Cork based company have become synonymous great
productions of 20th Century classics, having had hugely successful
runs at the Palace with THE ODD COUPLE in 2007 and TWELVE ANGRY MEN in
2006.
Alf McCarthy and Conor Dwane are re-united on stage in Ronald
Harwood’s funny and poignant study of the relationship between a
cantankerous Shakespearean actor and his loyal personal assistant. Set
on a production of King Lear during the Blitz in 1942, THE DRESSER
paints an evocative picture of wartime England.
Based on Ronald Harwood’s own experiences as dresser to a
distinguished English Shakespearean actor, THE DRESSER was nominated
for an Oliver Award after its world premiere in London in 1980, and
Tony Award and Drama Desk nominations after its debut on Broadway
during the same year. Adapted to a screenplay in 1983, the film
version was nominated for five Academy Awards.
THE DRESSER is produced by Skylight Productions in association with
Everyman Palace Theatre. Directed by Mairin Prendergast, the cast
features RTE’s Alf McCarthy, Conor Dwane, Martina Carroll, David Coon,
George Hanover, Kevin O’Meara and Niamh Hatchell.
THE DRESSER runs from November 11th – 22nd at the Everyman Palace
Theatre. Tickets are €25 / €20 and €7 for Students from Monday to
Wednesday, and can be booked on 021 4501673 or www.everymanpalace.com

Too Highbrow & Clinic Media present the World Premiere
of Kenneth Hickey’s play
‘Night Swimming’.
‘Night Swimming’ is a character driven story of death, love, madness
and loss. Directed by the up’n'coming Eoin Ó hAnnracháin and starring
the exciting talent of James Browne & Kate McSwiney O’Rourke.
In the darkness Jason is forced to deal with the shadowy regrets of
the past. We witness his tortured attempt at unravelling how fate has
led him to an ending he never wanted. With his wife Lorna he must
relieve his relationship from start to finish, scene by scene, over
the course of one night, until some understanding can be gained. But
insight can come too late for salvation. And sometimes it doesn’t come
at all…
Writer Kenneth Hickey is among the most exciting literary talent to
emerge from Cork in recent years. Hickey has had his work published
not only in Ireland, but England and the USA. He was the winner of
the Eamon Keane Full Length Play Award in 2005 and was short listed
for the award again in 2007. His one act play ‘Song of the Shore’ was
produced as part of the Windsor Fringe Festival in 2006, as well as by
the Theatre Studio Inc. New York in 2007. His plays are regularly
given rehearsed readings by Moving Parts Theatre Paris. Artistic
director of Too Highbrow, this will be Hickey’s fourth production of
his writing.
Director Eoin Ó hAnnracháin earned rave reviews for his ‘Howie the
Rookie’, part of the New Directors Festival in The Granary theatre
2007. He is one of the founding members of Clinic Media with David
O’Byrne, whose first project was ‘Howie The Rookie’ and next is their
self-penned, ‘Falling Slowly’. Ó hAnnracháin’s work has been described
as, ‘Fantastic and entirely credible….a fine achievement’.
‘Night Swimming’ stars two of Cork’s finest young actors; Kate
McSwiney O’Rourke and James Browne. Best known for his role in
‘Strength and Honour’, James Browne has treaded the boards with
companies such as Meridian in the past and is returning to the stage
for ‘Night Swimming’ . Kate McSwiney O’Rourke has earned critical
acclaim for her ‘dedicated & stunning’ performances in productions
such as, ’4.48 Psychosis’, ‘Lifeboat’, ‘Othello’ and, ‘Vanity, Vapours
& Dizzy Debutantes’. Both actors recently appeared in the popular Cork
short, ‘Closure’, in this year’s Cork Film Festival.
Performances will run 8pm, 11th – 15th of November in the Cork Arts
Theatre, Carroll’s Quay, Cork.
To book call +353 21 4505624.

MUSIC EVENTS
———————————————————————
Join Orpheus and sing your heart out!
The Orpheus Choir is looking for new members, especially ladies!
‘ Orpheus’ is a mixed-voice Munster choir, whose members come from
all over the province. It was founded in 2005 by a small group of
enthusiastic singers, but quickly gained enough members to be able to
have its inaugural concert in Castletownroche in 2007.
This year the choir, now with over thirty members, had a couple of
very successful concerts in Conna, Co. Cork and Cappoquin, Co.
Waterford and this coming season they have been invited back to Conna
as well as to Castlelyons, Fermoy and Mitchelstown.
Their repertoire ranges from secular choral music to opera choruses
and Irish ballads, but it is not necessary to be able to read music or
to have prior choral experience, as each member is supplied with a
learning CD of the music.
Choir practices take place from September to April on Monday nights
from 8pm to 10pm in the function-room of the Forge Bar, Fermoy, Co.
Cork and interested parties are always welcome to come along and
listen or partake, to see if they might like to join.
The choir, ‘a sociable bunch’, always in for a bit of ‘ craic agus
ceoil’, also regularly organise social evenings with, of course, the
obligatory ‘sing-song’ going on into the wee small hours of the
morning!

Project Brand New…
What will you make?
Project Brand New is an initiative, which exists to provide a
framework for theatre, dance, music and live art practitioners to
develop new work for the stage outside the traditional production
model. Together with Project Arts Centre we are offering you the
opportunity to put new ideas into practice at a developmental stage,
in an informal environment.
Project Brand New is about innovation, experimentation, and work that
strives towards the new. In March 2008, 13 pieces across many art
forms were shown as part of Project Brand New’s sell-out debut season.
In July, we moved upstairs where 12 pieces played to full houses over
three nights. We are now delighted to present the next season of
Project Brand New in January 2009, in Project Space Upstairs and we’re
dying to know what you will make….
Here’s how it works:
Over three nights in January 2009 (15, 16, 17) Project Space Upstairs
will play host to 8-12 new works made by you. These works can be up to
twenty minutes long. You can make whatever you like. You can use a
video projector, a playback sound system and anything else you can get
in and out of the space in a ten-minute turn around.
If you are interested, all you have to do is submit your ideas to us.
We ask for a brief description of your idea and where you would like
to take it, in no more than 500 words and a biography detailing your
previous work as an artist. If you are submitting a new play or
musical text, it is helpful, though not essential, for us to read a
draft of what you intend to present (N.B. please do not send us more
than 15 pages of any text, or more than 8 if the piece is a
monologue…if what you intend to present is part of a longer script,
just send us the section you will be working on and a synopsis of the
full text.)
Submissions will be assessed under the following criteria:
*The artistic quality of your idea
*The scope of your ambition
*The practical needs of your idea
Once we have selected the successful submissions for Project Brand
New, we will work with you to assist you in bringing your ideas to
fruition…You’ll have over 4 weeks to rehearse and execute your idea.
Project Brand New is a not-for-profit venture, where all the
participants’ time and resources, including Project Arts Centre, are
being offered free of charge. We do not have any additional budget for
props or equipment.
Please submit your application by 5pm on FRIDAY 5TH OF DECEMBER to
projectbrandnew@gmail.com. Please only send .doc, .pdf or .rtf files
and not .docx. Remember to include a contact phone number!
