GRANARY THEATRE - Irish Plays -
DISCO PIGS
9 - 14 July at 8pm
written by Enda Walsh and directed by Tony McCleane-Fay
Granary is presenting Enda Walsh’s acclaimed black comedy, Disco Pigs,
at the Theatre from Mon 9 - Sat 14 July. This is the first
professional ‘home-grown’ Cork revival of this groundbreaking work,
endorsed by the playwright and receiving a timely revival.
Described as ‘an Irish Clockwork Orange’, Disco Pigs is the story of
Pig (Shane Casey) and Runt (Samantha Heaney) who have been inseparable
since birth. Needing no one else, they reign over their own world,
creating their own language and rules and carving their way through
Cork in a reckless pursuit of pleasure.
But on the eve of their 17th birthday, their world begins to
disintegrate. Runt begins to see there might be more to life, but
Pig’s unpredictable nature begins to spiral out of control in a trail
of violence and destruction.
Directed by Tony McCleane-Fay (Irish Premiere of Kane’s “4:48
Psychosis” & Crimps “Face to the Wall”) Disco Pigs is a rollercoaster
ride for an audience, gripping you hard and not letting you go until
it spits you out at the end! With sets by Olan Wrynn and a new sound
design by Irene Buckley, this revival will be one not to be missed.
FRANK PIG SAYS HELLO
16 - 21 July at 8pm
written by Patrick McCabe, based on his novel The Butcher Boy
directed by Brian Desmond
The story focuses on the character of Francie Brady - referred to in
most of the play as Piglet - a troubled boy struggling to come to
terms with himself, his family and ultimately, his entire
surroundings. Burdened by the intrinsic fragility of his own mind,
Piglet’s childhood is also encumbered by an embittered, alcoholic
father, and what in modern parlance would be known as a manically
depressed mother. So with his father in and out of the pub, and his
mother in and out for treatment, Piglet is forced to look elsewhere
for human nourishment.
He gets the sustained sustenance he needs in the shape of peer Joe
Purcell, and the two become firm friends. But it’s a camaraderie that
is fatally unbalanced; with Piglet’s dependence on Joe having an
increasingly sinister effect. That dependence intensifies after the
suicide of Piglet’s mother, and when local sissy Philip Nugent, and in
particular, his mother, disturb the equilibrium of Francie and Joe’s
friendship, the narrative veers off into murkier territory. Directed
by Brian Desmond (Be Your Own Banana) and starring Mairtin DeCogain,
Sean McNally and Julie Butler all playing up to 35 characters, Frank
Pig Says Hello is fast, frenetic and hilariously funny.
